The fi eld is named for the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which collaborated with the two teams on the project. Salt River Fields denotes the location of the stadium within the Indian community, and Talking Stick is a reference to the traditional Pima Calendar Stick. Salt River Fields will be the third Talking Stick facility, joining Talking Stick Golf Club and Talking Stick Resort. Salt River Fields can accommodate up to 11,000 fans, said David Dunne, Spring Training operations manager. The main fi eld has 7,000 seats and can accommodate an additional 4,000 fans in the grass area beyond the out fi eld wall, giving it the largest grass seating area in Spring Training, said Dunne. “There is a great deal of shade here,” said Dunne. “About 75 percent of seats are in the shade by normal game time (1 p.m.).” The facility also has 12 practice fi elds. Through a system of elevated walkways, fans will be able to view players working out and practicing on these fi elds and in the batting cages as they walk throughout the grounds. “I think the fans will really enjoy it here,” Dunne said. The main fi eld also has bullpen terraces that will give fans a view of pitchers preparing to enter the game. “This is a very fan-friendly place, and there are lots of chances for up-close and personal contact with the players,” said Dunne. The stadium also will contain a Wif fl e Ball fi eld for children whose attention span doesn’t quite last nine innings. Fans also can expect a wide array of food options at Salt River Fields. Ovations Food Services will provide everything from hot dogs to Southwestern food, and a variety of local vendors will also add to the fl avor. Restaurants and outlets such as the Native New Yorker, Salty Senorita and Coldstone Creamery will be on site. The Diamondbacks make their Salt River Fields debut against the Rockies on February 26. The real fi reworks will happen on February 27, though, when the Diamondbacks host the defending world champion San Francisco Giants.
