Page 40 February 2011 averaged 15 miles a day, traveling from Cumbria to Yorkshire and through three national parks, until they reached their goal at the North Sea. “Brits are born walkers,” Mandy said. “The number of public footpaths crisscrossing the countryside re fl ect this.” With their North Yorkshire native guide in the lead, Bill Glover, they began each day on the trail by 9 a.m., sleeping at hotels along the way every night. Their fi rst two days were spent walking through the Lake District, up and over hills and on routes with names like Cof fi n Road. “We kept a lively pace, stopping only when our guide did to share a story with the group,” Mandy said. “The terrain was both rugged and amazing beautiful; Bill’s stories always a welcome relief.” Days three and four, they followed paths across the Yorkshire dales where they encountered wide-open pastures, passed royal castles and explored the hauntingly beautiful Gothic abbey of Rievaulx. “As an amateur historian I am fascinated by what people have been able to accomplish throughout time by hard work and dedication,” Chuck said. “I was literally awed by this massive structure that dates from the mid-1100s.” By day fi ve, they were walking across the North Yorkshire Moors and their goal of reaching the North Sea was within their grasp. “On the sixth day, we awoke to a light rain,” Mandy said. “Not only did the sun come out within 10 minutes of our starting on the trail, but it continued to shine on us all the way to the east coast of Britain.” The fi rst sighting of the North Sea brought jubilation and cheers from the entire group. “It was a beauty to behold,” Mandy said. “The march to the sea was festive. The nearer we got, the lighter our steps. All bum knees, swollen ankles and blistered feet forgotten.” Greeted with glasses of champagne, the group toasted to their success and accomplishments with arms raised high in victory as they paraded into the sea. Chuck said he “re fl ected both on the culmination of this one-week journey as well as the larger journey Mandy and I have been traveling together for many years.” The couple also celebrated their 85-mile, cross-country accomplishment privately. “We shared a bottle of wine while sitting on the hotel patio, surrounded by your typical gorgeous English garden, and watched the sun sink below the horizon,” Mandy said. “It was the ending movies are made of.” The two are no strangers to the concept of globe-trotting, and this six-day, coast-to- coast hiking expedition through England wasn’t their fi rst trekking experience. Since their fi rst trip to England in 1985, they have made frequent trips back to explore its countryside and villages at leisure. They also have participated in family home exchanges and summer study programs at Oxford and Cambridge. “If you were to look through Thomson family photo albums, you would notice very little changed inside our home for nearly 20 years,” Mandy said. “That’s because when faced with deciding between replacing living room furniture or taking a trip with our two children, Matt and Meredith, we always chose the trip. Who’s going to remember a new lamp? On the other hand, such stories we have to tell.” Kaley is a 24-year-old traveler from Arcadia who has lived in and traveled to roughly 30 countries. And here are some tips and information to help you get started on your next great adventure living and working as an English teacher in a foreign country: Pick a country Honestly, this is the biggest decision you’ll have to make throughout this entire process. When it comes to teaching English, some countries pay more than others. Although Latin and South America do have a growing need to learn English, there’s not a lot of money or resources there to pay for it. The monthly income for foreign teachers in these countries is rarely higher than $600- $700 a month, and often accommodations are paid for by the teacher out of those wages. The upside is that the cost of living is ridiculously low. In Europe, the wages are higher, but so is the cost of day-to-day life. Teaching positions also tend to take longer to fi nd. The Middle East pays the most, yet they often require a master’s degree and, like Europe, positions come up less often. Asia seems to offer the best opportunities right now for English teachers of all ages, and the demand is high across the continent. Because Asian countries need, want and can afford to import native English speakers today, the deal that comes with signing a standard one-year contract is enticing to say the least.
