33 JUNE 2026 As summer begins, the City of Phoenix is highlighting a series of programs aimed at supporting residents through business engagement, youth opportunities, environmental planning, and public services. One of the city’s most recognizable annual celebrations, 602 Day, is encouraging residents to shop local and support Valley businesses on June 2. The community- driven event celebrates Phoenix pride while shining a spotlight on restaurants, retailers, and organizations. Last year, more than 250 businesses and entities participated, with many reporting increased sales and record-setting foot traffic. Organizers are encouraging businesses interested in joining this year’s festivities to register through 602 Day’s website. Families looking for summer activities for children and teens also have a new opportunity through Camp Colley, an outdoor experience located on 30 scenic acres near the Mogollon Rim, roughly 50 miles north of Payson. Operated as an affordable summer option, the camp includes lodging, meals, and recreational activities designed to immerse campers in nature while building friendships and life skills. City officials say the program is intended to provide families with an accessible way to introduce children to outdoor experiences during the summer months. Learn more at campcolley.org. Phoenix leaders are continuing long-term planning efforts centered on food accessibility and sustainability. The City of Phoenix Office of Environmental Programs is currently developing the 2030 Phoenix Food Action Plan, which will guide the city’s food systems work over the next five years. The initiative focuses on improving access to healthy, affordable, and culturally relevant food for residents. Planning for the initiative began in March 2025 and has included collaboration with residents, nonprofits, farmers, and businesses. Officials say the process is intended to create strategies that help communities grow, access, and enjoy nutritious food while strengthening food systems throughout Phoenix. Residents will also begin seeing changes to solid waste rates following a recently approved adjustment by the city’s Public Works Department. After reviewing customer feedback and identifying operational efficiencies, the city reduced its original proposal from a $17 increase over three years to a $14 increase over the same period. According to city officials, the adjustment is designed to help offset rising inflationary costs, prepare for future growth, and maintain essential waste collection and management services citywide. The city announced the launch of the Federal Enforcement Complaint Reporting Portal as part of its Community Transparency Initiative. The online portal is intended to give residents a centralized way to report concerns related to federal enforcement activity. Together, the programs and initiatives reflect the city’s continued focus on community engagement, public services, sustainability, and quality-of-life improvements as Phoenix enters the summer season.
