36 MAY 2026 T here’s a lot happening across Phoenix in May, and whether it’s new community resources, road safety updates, or opportunities to make a difference, this month is bringing a mix of informative and impactful changes worth knowing about. A newly launched “Know Your Rights” webpage is now live through the City of Phoenix, designed to give residents clear, easy-to-understand information about civil rights and what to expect during encounters involving federal employees. The goal is simple: make sure the community has access to reliable information in one place, helping residents feel informed and prepared. On the community front, there’s also a meaningful opportunity to get involved in local education through the AARP Foundation Experience Corps Phoenix program. With just 27 percent of Phoenix third graders currently reading at grade level, the need for support is clear. This volunteer-based literacy program connects adults age 50 and older with young students, offering one-on-one or small group tutoring designed to build confidence and strengthen reading skills. Beyond academics, it’s creating powerful intergenerational connections by pairing wisdom and experience with curiosity and growth in a way that benefits everyone involved. Meanwhile, the city is also seeking public input on a proposed ordinance that would establish guidelines for medical treatment and food distribution activities in city parks. Residents are encouraged to weigh in before the proposal heads to Phoenix City Council later this month, making it a chance to have a direct voice in how public spaces are used to support those in need. And if your daily drive takes you along Camelback Road, take note: new photo safety cameras are now active between 24th and 32nd Streets. Installed in areas with higher rates of traffic collisions and near school zones, the program is designed as a reminder that sticking to the posted speed limit is the safest choice for everyone on the road. From policy to public safety to education, it’s a busy season in Phoenix – with plenty of ways to stay informed and get involved right where you are. Annie and her husband Lucas are raising five boys in Gilbert – we’d say Annie has more than earned her Mother’s Day crown! Molly and her husband Owen, a physical therapist in the area, are still living nearby and raising their two daughters in the same Arcadia neighborhood she grew up in. Bernie and Jackie have since relocated to Mesa, and when they did, they parted ways with the 1929 soda fountain that served as the memorable backdrop for their cover photo. Last the family heard, it found a new home as part of the collection at the Sanderson Ford museum. Some things don’t change, though.
