20 APRIL 2026 By Mark Hays The Scottsdale Charros have named the 2026 recipients of their annual Education Awards, recognizing outstanding teachers, students and athletes connected to the Scottsdale Unified School District. The awards program – now spanning more than six decades – highlights exceptional educators and students across the district. Each educator receives a personalized plaque and grant funding from the Charros to support their classroom or program. Meet the 2026 honorees below:  Teacher of the Year: Kelsey Maslowski, Math Maslowski was recognized for transforming mathematics instruction and helping students connect complex concepts to real-world thinking. Here are a few words from her nomination: “Kelsey is a transformative educator who has single- handedly redefined mathematics instruction at Arcadia High School, turning potential barriers into bridges for student success.” Her nomination also noted her leadership in launching the department’s “Building Thinking Classrooms” approach and redesigning courses like Financial Math and Integrated Algebra 2 to better engage students.  Teacher of the Year: Teresa Kadera, Math Kadera was honored for elevating the school’s math program and building student confidence through clear instruction and consistent classroom routines. Here are a few words from her nomination: “She truly understands the standards inside and out and, even more importantly, knows how to explain concepts in multiple student-friendly ways so every student can access the material. Watching her teach is like watching magic.” Teacher of the Year: Erika Stevens, Counselor Stevens was recognized for her work helping students’ emotional well-being across Echo Canyon’s K-8 campus. Here are a few words from her nomination: “Erika is amazing! She supports all of our K-8 students in an amazing way. We repeatedly hear how much her patience and kindness have helped to support students as they learn to regulate their emotions in and out of school.”  Teacher of the Year: Katie Whitworth, First Grade Whitworth, who has taught at Hopi for more than 20 years, was recognized for her dedication to students and mentorship of fellow educators. Here are a few words from her nomination: “Her classroom is a joyful, engaging environment where every child feels loved, challenged, and inspired to succeed both academically and personally.”  Teacher of the Year: Martin Becerra, Physical Education Becerra was honored for his leadership both in the classroom and as a coach. Here are a few words from his nomination: “Martin goes beyond teaching physical education; he instills in his students the understanding that character, respect, and effort define true success.”  Teacher of the Year: Maria DeVenuto, Reading Specialist DeVenuto was honored for her work supporting students and teachers through literacy instruction and professional development. Here are a few words from her nomination: “Maria is invested in our school and works hard to provide ongoing support to our community… She works hard to understand and support our students’ challenges and builds strong relationships with them.” OUTSTANDING STUDENTS OF THE YEAR  ARCADIA HIGH SCHOOL Kinsey Hunkins Hunkins was recognized as a scholar-athlete and campus leader who balances Advanced Placement coursework and athletics while serving the community. She holds a 4.5 GPA and participates in student government, the Scottsdale Mayor’s Youth Council and the Titans Feeding Students Club. Here are a few words from her nomination: “Kinsey Hunkins is a genuine, positive, and motivated leader who perfectly embodies the spirit of Arcadia.” Reed Schultz Schultz was honored for his academic excellence and commitment to helping classmates succeed. Here are a few words from his nomination: “Reed Schultz is an academic powerhouse whose brilliance is matched only by his humility and dedication to service.” Teachers noted he regularly tutors peers, runs study sessions and even offers free tutoring in the library, while also operating a geography-focused educational YouTube channel with more than half a million subscribers.
