38 FEBRUARY 2026 By Cliff Summerhill Students from Xavier and Brophy Prep kicked off their winter break at the 2025 Arizona High School Pickleball Championships, finishing first overall in a tournament that brought together students from 25 Arizona high schools. The combined Brophy-Xavier team earned 26 points over two days of competition, narrowly finishing ahead of Corona del Sol, which placed second with 24 points. Mountain View finished third with 19. Brophy’s involvement began through its pickleball club, which partnered with Xavier as the sport is coed. “We were all excited, and the Broncos were grateful that the Gators led the way,” Brophy’s moderator Patrick Higgins said. Several students played key roles in the win, including juniors Colin St. Hilaire and Druva Vignesh, as well as sophomore Warren Park. Xavier athletes also turned in strong performances throughout. Freshmen Ava Shoen and Makenna McLachlin won the Girls Doubles, and Ava and Colin added runner-up finishes in Girls Singles and Mixed Doubles. Ella Boyle, Alayna Zimmerman, Mia Calihan, and Georgia Schultz helped keep the momentum high. “The students were thrilled to represent Xavier and Brophy and win the top team award,” said Coach Paul Shoen. “It was a bit surreal because it isn’t a widely recognized sport yet, and all of a sudden they were competing against 25 other schools.” The winners received JOOLA- branded paddles and a soft sponsorship that includes discounts and the possibility of future professional demonstrations. The championship event was organized by Arizona High School Pickleball, an initiative launched by the team behind PURE Pickleball & Padel. The group helped start and support more than 30 high school clubs across Arizona during the 2025 school year. Their mission is to make pickleball a high school sport in Arizona and to make Arizona a blueprint for other states to follow. Event leaders said they hope school support continues to grow as more students get involved. In addition to five state championship events and the high school state championship event, the initiative announced the PURE Academy, a new development program for all ages and skill levels, which started in January.
