By Ana Redzic W ith the end of the first semester at hand, students were eager for winter break to begin. From traveling to studying, here is how Arcadia High School spent its holiday. “I started planning by asking my parents to go skiing because I haven’t gone in a while,” sophomore Samantha Gagnon enthusiastically said. “They decided to incorporate it into a trip with my cousins from Colorado, and we eventually decided to spend our Christmas with them.” All students and staff were looking forward to their holiday trips. “I was very excited for winter break! I went up north to Flagstaff to a cabin with my family, went snowboarding, had hot chocolate by the fireplace, you know, the typical Christmas,” senior Kiara Vicario Nueva said. Spending quality time with family was a trend this winter, as sophomores Evelyn Udvare and Cooper Janson also traveled to visit relatives. A MARKETABLE SUCCESS On December 3 and 4, students at Arcadia High participated in an exciting yearly tradition called Market Day. The name might not make it sound very exciting, but it’s something we look forward to every year. Market Day is a school event where seniors in economics classes are given several assignments that require them to work with real-world concepts of company creation, such as business plans, invoices, and pitches, to create their own product and brand. The fun part comes when students work with teams to develop a product that they can sell to other students during Market Day. Something worth noting is that the students cover all the costs of creating the products, and that all the money they make from sales also belongs to them. However, financial success does not affect academic success… that would just be cruel! Rather, the work that they put into planning and “I went to my grandparents’ house in Newport Beach,” Evelyn said with a smile. Cooper went to Idaho to ski with his cousins. Junior Lily Trieu was eager for the festivities to begin. “I visited my grandparents in Kansas, where I moved out all of their old stuff and went through my parents’ childhood memories,” she said. “I also wrote my research paper for AP Language, which I was excited to do because I put a lot of work into it.” Lily was not the only junior planning on taking advantage of the sixteen days of break. “I studied for AP tests and applied for scholarships during my break,” junior Evra Therien said. “I was glad I got time to study and work on the AP Lang research paper since it allowed me to zone in and focus, I don’t have as much time during school.” One thing is for sure: Titan holidays are always packed with lots of festive fun. executing the sale of their product is what is reflected in the gradebooks. Students have a great time on Market Day, and this year was no exception. Ms. Morrison, one of the economics teachers who oversees the entire process, said: “Our Market Day was very successful! There were a lot of great designs and products that students put together, and it was fun to see students using or wearing the products that they had purchased on later dates.” “It was pretty awesome seeing everybody’s Market Day projects come together. My group worked very hard on our project, so knowing that everybody else put in that same amount of work and seeing it all pay off was very cool,” senior Paul Huisman said. This year’s Market Day was a great success and may just be the start of impressive careers for all of Arcadia’s aspiring entrepreneurs. – Hutch Corey A winter break fit for Titans Avery Liu, Sophia Elena Mignacca, Emily Rios Quinto, Elsa Nunley and Caitlin Attwood.
