4 JULY 2025 EDITOR’S NOTE I have a very special place in my heart for breakfast food. Eggs, pancakes, sausage and bacon, granola, toast – it’s all beautiful and all things I would demolish every day if I made time to cook in the morning. There is however, one item that stands above all – it’s easy to prepare and can be enjoyed no matter what time of day it is: the bagel. These doughy nibbles were created in Central Europe during the Middle Ages. At first, they were in the form of a German pretzel bread (like pretzels are today) and served to monks in monasteries. The treat made its way to Poland in the 1300s, where locals modified the bread form to produce smaller, round pieces called obwarzanek . Made with pricier white flour, obwarzane k (“to boil” in Polish) were only enjoyed by the upper and royal classes. We could go on and on about the history, but what’s more important are the multitude of places where one can buy a bagel today, including right here in Arcadia with Dewey’s Market, a small-batch sourdough bagel venture founded by Matt Dewey. With no storefront and orders taken via Instagram, the word-of-mouth operation offers handmade, preservative-free bagels delivered to neighborhood homes. 5 JULY 2025 By Cliff Summerhill Veritas Prep graduate Mathew Getzoff has been named this year’s recipient of the DAR Good Citizen Award, presented by the Camelback Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), an organization that was founded in 1890. With 45 chapters and approximately 3,000 members across the state, the organization is active in historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Arizona members volunteer thousands of hours annually to support veterans, students, and civic initiatives. The Good Citizen Award, established in 1934, honors high school seniors who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Each participating school selects one senior who best exemplifies these values, and the chosen student may compete for additional recognition at the state and national levels. Getzoff was selected by VPA faculty and staff for his academic accomplishments, leadership on campus, and commitment to serving his community. “It is an honor to receive recognition from such a rich and storied tradition as the Daughters of the American Revolution,” Getzoff said. “I have a great sense of fulfillment knowing I have made a positive impact in people’s lives. I thank DAR from the bottom of my heart for showing me what my service means to others.” Receiving the award allowed him to reflect on his time at Veritas and the teachers and staff who made a difference in his life. “I’m so grateful for Mrs. Sara Marbach, my counselor, all of my teachers, and the rest of the faculty,” Getzoff said. “They are an extremely generous group of people who understand each student intimately, and they want nothing more than for us to succeed.” Getzoff received a certificate, a commemorative pin, and a monetary award from the Camelback Chapter as part of the recognition. “Mathew was selected because he embodies the values DAR seeks to recognize: dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism,” Arizona State Regent Sarah Ziker said. “His record of academic excellence, leadership in school and community activities, and commitment to civic engagement made him stand out.” Ziker emphasized that the Good Citizen Award is one of DAR’s most meaningful youth outreach programs. “Honoring students like Mathew helps us celebrate the values our organization was built upon,” Ziker said. “His actions in and out of the classroom demonstrate a deep sense of purpose and service. He exemplifies what it means to be a good citizen and offers hope for a better future.” Getzoff said his proudest achievements have been the less noticeable moments, such as supporting his classmates, training early with his basketball coach, and following through on personal goals. “I’ve felt most fulfilled with those, and I was most accomplished when I made others feel their best,” Getzoff said. “Veritas is a place where service and leadership are not only encouraged but expected. I’m extremely grateful to have been part of a community that values those things.” After graduating with honors, Getzoff earned an ASU Leadership Scholarship and plans to major in business entrepreneurship. He hopes to use his education to launch a service-based business that combines his passion for helping others. “This is simply fuel to the fire in my pursuit of the service of others and the upholding of our values of citizenship and leadership,” Getzoff said. “I am now motivated to do more and give more wherever I can.” dar.org Good Citizen Award celebrates graduate’s service and integrity DAR’s Sue Roberts, L’zann Ayers, Jolene Beard and Deianna Jones with Mathew Getzoff.
