18 JULY 2025 F or a woman who has never experienced childbirth, Linda Chambliss is an expert in labor and delivery. As the Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Valleywise Health, she has overseen the birth of more than 30,000 babies. Chambliss also understands the province of motherhood, as she has four children of her own – all of whom were adopted. Hers is a deep belief and genuine commitment to family. “My mother was a nurse and she encouraged me to go into nursing. That’s what you did if you were a girl interested in science. It was a different time,” she said, shaking her head. In fact, she did start out as a nurse, working on the Hopi and Navajo reservations in the 70s and 80s before going to medical school at Michigan State University. She then did an internship at the prestigious Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Chambliss stayed and did her residency at the renown Cook County Hospital before going on to USC for a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine. She also holds a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University. She has worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Valleywise Health – the public “safety-net” hospital for indigent care – for a combined 35 years. Through the decades, she has learned much about the social factors impacting public health. So much so that she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 to discuss the pertinent issues. “At a county hospital you see it all, and that is why it’s such a great place to learn. Many of the patients we see are high-risk and have serious personal issues, including victims of domestic violence,” Chambliss said. The New Jersey native has never been married but that didn’t stop her from adopting her children. Serving on the Arizona Aid to Adoption board opened her eyes to the tens of thousands of kids in foster care. Despite her impressive career accomplishments, Chambliss says her children are easily her “proudest achievement.” The family includes Alice (29), Kevin (29), Christopher (22) and Danny (21), all of whom were adopted when they were two or younger. “The reward in adopting is knowing you have helped people who are in less-than-ideal circumstances,” she said. Her daughter said it is difficult to single out one thing that makes her mom special. “She is so caring and has done so much for our family. We get to do a lot of things that most kids don’t get to do,” Alice said, adding, “She is also a talented and courageous doctor. There is nothing going wrong under her watch.” Not surprisingly, Chambliss has won repeated teaching awards, special recognition bestowed on her by her medical students and residents. But she doesn’t take herself or her profession too seriously. She has a wry sense of humor and says doo- wop is her go-to music. “Rap artists should have to do hard time,” she said, with a laugh. And just to stay sharp, she works the crossword puzzle every day. Her advice to the next generation of physicians: “Medicine, despite some of the needless bureaucracy, is still the best job going.” Her daughter predicts that her mother will never retire, and for the next generation of physicians, that would be quite fortunate.
