38 MAY 2025 By Kylie de Best Just like the meaning of the Ancient Greek word, “an assembly of the people,” Arcadia High’s annual Agora is a mecca of fine art, and something the school looks forward to every year. Agora is made possible through the efforts of Arcadia’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) students and art teacher Cira Riccio. At this event, student artwork from Arcadia High, Ingleside, Hopi, Tavan and Echo Canyon is displayed in the hallways for attendees. The work often portrays a message or story for the audience. AP art student Frida Tripkehughes said she felt inspired for her piece by what happens when we lose something. “How do those forms change without our contact? It was a chance to explore that catharsis within myself and others,” Frida said. “Art is the best form of expression.” The Agora offered activities like henna, face painting, caricatures, and bracelet making that were either run or executed by the students. The NAHS also sold handmade ceramics, jewelry, and buttons, and there were even a few paintings available for purchase. Fantasy Funnel Cake, a favorite among students and attendees, and Habanero’s Street Tacos were on-site for patrons to grab a bite to eat. A string trio, jazz band, and CMAS performances kept the energy high with live music. Senior Sam Insley was excited to participate in her final Agora before graduation. “It’s the only time of year visual art students get to show off their work. The senior panels (for students who have taken Art I, Drawing, Painting and AP Art classes) are very rewarding and put years of work and practice on display,” she said. This year, $717 from the event was donated to the Art One Foundation, a nonprofit associated with Art One Gallery that offers financial aid, art supplies, tuition assistance, and support for other art-related expenses. “This event is a great way to see support from peers, family, teachers, even former students. Our art students are proud of what they create and giving them the opportunity to show off their work for one big night means a lot to them,” Riccio said. Plans are already underway for next year’s event, and the schools can’t wait to share what they’ve been working on.
