On the flip side, there are no hedgehogs native to Australia or the Americas. They have five toes on each foot, with a small claw on each toe to help them climb. In winter, hedgehogs can enter a state of deep “torpor,” where their body temperature drops significantly and their heart rate slows down to conserve energy. Hedgehogs are natural swimmers and use their spines to help them float. They don’t have the best vision, but their sense of smell and hearing is incredibly sharp. Hedgehogs roll into a tight ball as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened. Their spines point outward, protecting them from predators. In Ireland, hedgehogs are one of the most common mammalian road fatalities. They are lactose intolerant and primarily eat insects, worms, snails, fruits, vegetables, and even small frogs or eggs. Hedgehogs were first domesticated during the 4th century BC by the Romans. They were primarily raised for their meat and quills, but were also kept as pets. As of 2019, it is illegal to own a hedgehog as a pet in Hawaii, Georgia, Pennsylvania, California, New York City and Washington, D.C. SAY WHAT?
