The LOC has over 30 million cataloged books, with millions of other materials, including manuscripts, digital files, and microforms. The first woman librarian, Clara Bolton, was appointed in 1899. It has one of the largest and most comprehensive map collections, including historical maps from around the globe. The library has a copy of the First Folio, published in 1623, which is one of the most important collections of Shakespeare’s plays.
