24 JANUARY 2025 HERE ARE A COUPLE TIPS FROM FETCH TO GET YOU STARTED Getting your pup from the crate to your yard: Pick a spot in the yard where you want the pup to do its business. This way, you can control where they go every time. As the dog gets a little older, you can take them on a leash and run to the same spot. Make sure to praise them lavishly! “Just imagine how great it would be for your pup to go poop in one spot rather than having it go everywhere. This will prevent your dog from leaving little gifts for you and your kiddos to step on all over the yard,” Nelson shared. Stop the squeal! Don’t “squeal” at your new puppy. Almost 100 percent of the time kids and adults start saying in an extremely animated high voice, ‘buddy, oh my gosh, you are so cute’ or ‘do you want to come and play?’ All this excitement leads to one thing – a potty accident. By Cliff Summerhill Training a dog takes a village… and a good trainer. That’s where Jane Nelson comes in. The Arcadia local has returned to the training industry after 25 years to help families feel a little less overwhelmed when they bring home a new furry friend. “I started my business because I’m passionate about helping people train their dogs,” Nelson said. “It’s fascinating to me to watch people learn how to train their dog with confidence, love, and consistency.” Nelson describes herself as both a people and a dog person, creating a natural combination for her to focus her energy on both families and their furry friends. Having a new puppy is a huge commitment and a lot of work, so she hopes to help people rise up to the challenge. One of her early clients was Callie, a German Shepherd seeing eye dog, who Nelson trained for the Seeing Eye Foundation in Phoenix. “Callie lived with our family and our two other dogs for a year,” Nelson said. “I took her to the movies, church, on a plane, school cafeteria, and the park to socialize her with other dogs, little kids and adults.” One year later, Nelson’s family took Callie to the training center, where she was connected with her new owner. While it was tough to give Callie up, she was able to give the woman the gift of companionship, freedom, and independence. More recently, Nelson trained a dog named Lola for therapy work. After training, Lola joined Gabriel’s Angels and worked with special needs children at Banner Hospital and the Crisis Nursery. N e l s o n ’ s approach to training is a little different than others. First, she believes praise works better than treats. She quickly learned this when training dogs like Callie, noting that she was unable to give treats because of restrictions on seeing eye dogs. That is why Nelson has always felt that praise alone is the key. Another exercise is leash training. Having a dog pulling on the leash while on a walk can be a frustrating experience. Nelson helps teach the dog how to heel right next to you – that way, you can enjoy exercise together. In addition, Nelson has one prerequisite for the families she works with: everyone in the household must be involved. Nelson even takes roll call in each session to drive home the point. Her success rate is directly related to the family’s dedication. “It’s fun for each child and adult to have responsibility for a specific job,” Nelson said. “Then you see how your family can work as a team and everybody wins, especially the new pup. If everyone’s cohesive, the pup follows the family’s lead.” Moving forward, Nelson wants to continue spreading the word about Fetch and helping educate families on how best to teach and implement basic obedience in their homes.
