32 DECEMBER 2024 By Mark Hays Arizona’s longest-standing men’s chorus has enriched the community with powerful performances and a commitment to service for 96 years. Founded in 1929, the Orpheus Male Chorus is one of Arizona’s most well-known male choirs. Its mission is to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of choral music through performance and outreach. Its 100+ members have become known for their wide-ranging repertoire, including classical, contemporary, and barbershop styles. The group has performed at major venues in the Phoenix area and beyond, building a strong community presence and earning a dedicated following. Three of those 100 members are Arcadia residents: Matt Roberts, Drew Peterson and Dave Thomas. Peterson, a local since 1985, joined Orpheus after attending a fundraiser concert at Trinity Cathedral in 2001. “Another member, Skip Richards, a fellow Arcadia High School band parent, had invited us. Having been a singer all my life, I was drawn to the group by their rich four-part male harmony,” he said. Peterson is now in his 24th season, and his wife, Gail, has been involved as a volunteer for over 20 years. Peterson said that Orpheus is essential to the Arcadia community, especially during the holiday season. “My neighbor has told me more than once that ‘the holidays without the Orpheus concert just wouldn’t be complete,’” he said. Roberts first encountered the group over a decade ago. “I started singing with Orpheus through a couple of mutual friends, Ron Rhode and Ron Tanner,” he said. “Ron Rhode was the pianist for Orpheus and also at the church I attended, where my wife was one of the ministers. Tanner sang in the choir. They invited me to a concert, and I thought they were amazing, so I accepted their offer to audition.” Thomas was introduced in 2014. After attending a Christmas concert, he knew he wanted to be part of the group – and said that the decision has led to some lasting friendships. “The music we create brings me and our audience so much joy, peace and comfort. It really is true that music is the universal language of the soul,” he said. For Roberts and other members, the chorus provides a unique opportunity for musical performance and a sense of community. Orpheus also participates in service projects, such as volunteering at Feed My Starving Children, caroling at the Arizona Veterans Home, and offering scholarships to young musicians. Artistic Director Dr. Brook Carter Larson noted that rehearsals balance focus and camaraderie. New members join a group of men who love music and value the friendships formed through singing together. Rehearsals are held weekly from August through April. For those who would like to experience the music, Orpheus will hold three concerts: one on December 8 at 3 p.m. at The Church at Litchfield Park, one on December 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Velda Rose United Methodist Church, and one on December 15 at 3 p.m. at Camelback Bible Church. Those interested in joining the chorus can attend the next Open Holiday Rehearsal on December 3 at Cross Roads United Methodist Church. orpheus.org Sing loud for all to hear: The Orpheus Male Chorus is gearing up for the holidays Orpheus offers three concerts for the holiday season – a tradition that’s lasted over 90 years.
