22 NOVEMBER 2024 By Kylie de Best PANDA (People Acting Now Discover Answers) was founded in 1999 and is a 100 percent volunteer-based organization that raises money for pediatric medical research for the Steele Children’s Research Center (SCRC). The organization consists of a women-led working group of 70 active members and over 200 board members, all who pour their hearts into their work to continue changing the lives of many. PANDA has helped raise more than $35 million in funding and $100 million in grants for SCRC. In September, PANDA held its annual donation campaign, “Pandas for Patients,” with the goal of donating plush panda bears to patients and their siblings who are being treated at the research center. The campaign started in 2017 and was originally called Teddy Bear Day before evolving into the current name. This year, PANDA held pop-up events at Garage Boutique Scottsdale, The Henry, Flower Child Desert Ridge and Flower Child Central. For a $35 donation at the pop-ups or online, one stuffed panda was donated. Donators could purchase any number and even personalize them with a written message. Thanks to the contributions of more than 370 individual donors from 128 zip codes, the campaign was a huge success. More than $54,000 was raised, and over 1,550 stuffed pandas were gifted. Patients who received them felt loved and supported, and it gave them courage as they go through difficult times in their lives. “When I got my stuffed panda, it felt good. I was scared going to the hospital and he stayed with me. I love Pandy so much,” five-year-old Lana Cohen shared. “Thanks to Fox Restaurant Concepts, we hosted pop-ups at select restaurant locations. We loved getting the word out about PANDA,” Board Member Cecelia Herro shared. “Children and families were not only able to send a snuggle but could also see PANDA in action and actively give back to patients who need it most. After all, we are all about teaching the next generation the importance of giving back.” For more than two decades, PANDA has funded pilot projects and early-stage research. This has resulted in millions of dollars in grant seed money for SCRC, which has been used to attract world- class physician-scientists and bring new treatments and cures to the world. The organization is currently working toward its 25th Anniversary event, titled “A Celebration of Children Helping Children,” on March 29, 2025.
