Rival companies would send out spies, and during author Roald Dahl’s childhood, British confectionary companies Cadbury and Rowntree’s were constantly in competition. In early drafts of the book, Oompa-Loompas were called Whipple-Scrumpets. Willy Wonka was also called Mr. Ritchie in the first draft, but Dahl renamed him after a boomerang that his brother made, which he called a “Skilly-Wonka.” The lost first draft of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory might have had as many as 15 children – with names like Tommy Troutbeck, Clarence Crump, Marvin Prune and Bertie Upside – visiting the factory. Actor Gene Wilder said he would only accept the role if he could appear crippled in his entrance and then “do a forward somersault and jump up” to surprise the crowd. His request was granted, and the scene is now a famous movie entrance. Wilder confirmed that a third of the candy in the film was real.
