4 JULY 2024 EDITOR’S NOTE We have an exciting announcement: archives from Arcadia News, all the way back to our beginnings in 1993, have a new home in the Arizona Room at Burton Barr Public Library in downtown Phoenix. Dropping the papers off was a proud and humbling moment when considering the cache of publications that are now shelved within this institution for Arizona history. It is an honor to share more than 30 years of community news and stories with anyone looking to do research – or just take a walk down memory lane! Early July is all about those red, white and blue celebrations, and the Valley has plenty. Check out our calendars to find various Independence Day events. In our backyard, the Arcadia Fourth of July parade – a 27- year tradition – is gearing up for the holiday with decorated cars, bikes and wagons, snacks from local eateries, even a visit from the Phoenix Fire Department to keep things cool. Phoenicians know how to spend their summers – most of us hit the pool, beach or lake to escape the heat. Four Arcadia ladies did the same, but their objective was less about cooling off and more about completing the SCAR Swim, a self- timed competition that spans 40 miles of the Saguaro, Canyon, Apache and Roosevelt Lakes. Susie Paul, Marnie Whitley, Dana Price, and Kerston Corns hope their journey inspires others to get out of their comfort zone and try something new. Our Summer Vacation Photo Spread is happening again this year, so send photos to editor@arcadianews.com for a chance to be in the September issue. Your photo might be on the cover! The deadline to send in photos is August 9. Enjoy your summer, and thank you for reading the Arcadia News. — Mallory Gleich UPCOMING THEMES: No one has better coverage in the areas of Arcadia, Biltmore and the Camelback Corridor. I like playing ball and having toy time with my stuffed animal friends. I like play dates with my pup buds, shout out to Tank and Toby! I also like hanging out with my brothers Dublin and James at doggy daycare. – Tommy P. 2. Sweet Annie is a 15.5-year old terrier. She is slowing down and only walks until she wants to stop. Brownie (right) loves everyone she meets and is the sweetest, gentle dog. Unsure of her age. Both are rescues from shelters. They love our Arcadia walks and the people they meet. – Greg and Cathy N. 3. It is my sincere pleasure to introduce His Royal Highness, Prince Charles of Arcadia. He is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, six years old, spending his days taking a dip when it’s warm and napping whenever he feels inclined. If you’re lucky, you may see him walking the neighborhood with his parents in tow – usually in the evenings when it is cool…like him! – Joe and Lynda P. 4. My name is Savvy, and I am four years old. My people adopted me from the Phoenix Cat Cafe two years ago and I’ve been the happiest, cuddliest kitty ever since. If you put a blanket on your lap, I’ll be there in a jiffy to make biscuits and cuddle! – Paulina M. 1 3 2 4 ARCADIA 'S PETS Would you like to share your pet? In 1934, Dorothy McClintock donated her late husband’s personal archive to Phoenix Public Library. James McClintock is a significant figure in early Arizona history – he served in Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, the 1st United States Volunteer Calvary, worked as a journalist and historian, and served as a postmaster of Phoenix in the early 1900s. James collected a personal archive of 2,000 photographs and thousands of pages of notes and letters of correspondence with other Arizona historical figures. He also compiled scrapbooks of newspaper articles from the early 1900s. The James H. McClintock Collection provides a look at early Arizona history, including pre-statehood era, and tells a story of daily life through the 1920s. “The donation is the cornerstone of Burton Barr’s local history collection and led to the creation of the ‘Southwest Collection’ in later decades before evolving into what is now known as the Arizona Room,” Community Relations Director Lee Franklin said. The Arizona Room is a local reference collection on the history, culture and peoples of Arizona. It includes a variety of materials, from books to magazines, yearbooks to city directories, vinyl records to newspaper clippings and more. The collection has grown a lot over the years – from “33 linear feet of McClintock’s personal archive to more than 50,000 items.” Materials come from library purchasing and donations. The Arizona Room is also a space where public tours are given by library staff, showcasing what the area has to offer and guiding attendees through a curated display of interesting items in the collection. One of the most interesting is the Susan Arreola postcard collection – there are over 2,500 vintage Arizona-themed postcards that were donated by Susan in 2019. The postcards are from the first half of the 20 th century and show th century and show th daily life in the Valley of the Sun. The oldest items are from the late 1800s, including a copy of the official plat of the original townsite from 1895. There’s also a city directory from 1892 and 1895 – one of the most popular sub-collections. The newest item? The complete collection of Arcadia News copies, dating from its first issue in 1993 all the way up to 2024. The Arizona Room is open to the public on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 12-4 p.m. Appointments are available on Monday and Friday. phoenixpubliclibrary.org Arizona historical archives now include Arcadia News Greg delivered over 350 issues of Arcadia News, completing the collection of 32 years of neighborhood and community news. The papers are now part of the special collections available in The Arizona Room at Burton Barr Central Library in downtown Phoenix.
