Orders that have fewer than 4 shades will not be awarded any rebate. 18 JULY 2024 T he Summer Games of the XXXIII Olympiad will happen soon, and the whole world may be watching from the comfort of their homes. Jessica McClain doesn’t care to watch – she hopes to be there, competing for a medal. Earlier this year, the 32-year-old Phoenix native ran the race of her life and placed fourth in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Her time of 2:25:46 – a personal best – made her an alternate to the marathon team and she will head to Paris to compete if one of the top three qualifiers withdraws. “Our team’s gonna be a knockout,” Jessica predicted, “but I’ll be training hard, so I’m ready for August if needed. If not, I’ll be cheering for those three.” Not content to sit and wait for her name to be called, Jessica has decided also to try to qualify for the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials in Eugene. Her mark of 31:35 punched her ticket to do so on June 29. “It’s a bit of a long shot, but that’s what I thought about my chances in the marathon, and that worked out,” she said with a grin. Jessica began running when she was 12 and has only improved over time. She was a local track star, racing at Xavier Prep before competing in cross country and indoor/outdoor track at Stanford. There, she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication and was a seven-time All-American. She said it can be challenging to know just how hard it is to train for competitions – how to properly fuel and recover and also how to best hydrate during the actual race. She doesn’t have a coach and trains on her own. Jessica runs every day, beginning at 5 a.m. in the summer, but takes one day off every other week. “It’s like having a part-time job, really,” she said. Jessica ran professionally while living in Seattle until she returned to Phoenix in 2019. After her impressive marathon finish, Brooks Footwear re-signed her, and she represents them in the marketplace, competing with and speaking to community groups. “It’s a perfect fit. They’ve shown me great support and understanding,” she said. Her real job is serving as Executive Director of the Johnjay & Rich #LoveUp Foundation, a nonprofit that advocates for youth foster care. She also serves as Marketing Director of the #LovePup Foundation and is a freelance marketing consultant. Jessica met her husband, Connor, at her cousin’s surprise birthday party in 2019 and the real surprise – only because she didn’t think she’d ever have time to date – was that they hit it off and married a little over two years later. When she isn’t running, she likes to cook, hike, and spend time with her family, friends, and her rescue pup, Clyde. “I always try to sprinkle in some fun with whatever I do. Connor and I enjoy living in Arcadia, and I love running throughout the neighborhood; it’s the best part of my day,” she said. Always on the move and juggling to fit everything into a schedule, she tries to remember the advice of her college coach, who told her, “Be where your feet are; be in the moment.” Easier said than done for someone who is always on the run.
