32 JUNE 2024 By Sherry Sklar Nicholas Larrain, a junior at Brophy Prep, is poised to embark on a transformative experience, as he was selected for a summer internship with Bank of America’s Student Leadership program. This coveted opportunity will not only see him travel to Washington, D.C. but also pave the way for his future as a community leader while participating in a program designed to cultivate the next generation. “When I was accepted, I felt as if I were Charlie in the chocolate factory and I had found the golden ticket,” he said. The path to becoming a Bank of America Student Leader was not without challenges. Nicholas navigated a rigorous application process, which required him to articulate his experiences and aspirations through essay-based reflections. There are six essays in the application; four of them have a 1,000-character limit and two have a 2,000-character limit. Nicholas spent 20 hours on the essays over the span of four weeks. Community service has been a consistent part of Nicholas’s life, a journey that began in sixth grade at Christ Lutheran School. Since then, he has volunteered at several nonprofits, amassing over 400 service hours. This past winter, he was already preparing for a summer internship, diligently researching an opportunity that would allow him to contribute at the highest level. The Bank of America Student Leader Program stood out for its leadership, commitment and social awareness. It aligns perfectly with Nicholas’s aspirations to contribute to his community and study business in college. “I’ve always felt the need to give back and don’t see it as a chore. I characterize myself as a servant-leader and focus on putting others first,” he said. “My community work led me to apply for the Bank of America Student Leaders. I am interested in how my leadership skills will develop through this experience.” Bank of America handpicks approximately 300 students across 100 communities each year for the program. This year, 7,000 students applied. The program is highly competitive, with an overall acceptance rate between five and eight percent. Participants are assigned paid internships at local nonprofits while developing community, social and business leadership skills. Nicholas is one of five chosen from Arizona. The internship wraps with a week-long summit in Washington, D.C., scheduled for July 22–27. Nicholas looks forward to meeting his cohort of student leaders in person and exploring the intersection of civics, politics and business. His 8-week paid internship will happen at the Boys & Girls Club of the Valley, an organization that provides after-school and summer programs for more than 16,000 young people. Nicholas sees this opportunity as a natural progression of his current work as a “Kids Go” program volunteer at Saving Amy, where he mentors children transitioning out of homelessness. Nicholas’s schedule is hectic, and this future leader expertly balances his volunteer schedule with rigorous academics – but he said it took a lot of practice and a bit of help from dad. “I rely heavily on my planner to keep me on task and moving forward, but my father has most influenced me. He has excellent time management skills, which he developed in the Marines and passed onto me,” Nicholas said. “He gives 110 percent to everything he does, which I try to emulate with my service, classwork, or anything else I participate in. I’d say he inspires me to be better and achieve.” Rising senior participates in Student Leaders Program Nicholas Larrain will head to Washington, D.C., this summer.
