4 APRIL 2024 — – EDITOR’S NOTE Arcadia News is celebrating 32 years as your good news newspaper this year. We couldn’t have done it without the love and support of our community, so thank you and happy birthday to us! The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Student Visionaries of the Year is a development program for high school students, where participants campaign to raise money for the organization. According to the website, their goal is to “create a world without blood cancers.” Fourteen students at Arcadia High, Brophy Prep, Phoenix Country Day School and Xavier Prep each created teams of three and got to work, recruiting family, friends and other students to help fundraise. When the campaign ended in early March, 27 high schoolers from the greater Phoenix area gathered to learn that they had raised more than three quarters of a million bucks in just two months. Our April edition includes the summer camp guide, chock-full of everything “camp.” This year, we’ve highlighted space camps, book clubs and cool things to do to beat the summer heat. Whether families travel this summer or hang out in the backyard, the Arcadia News Summer Camp Guide should have something for everyone. Hi, my name is Page and I’m way too old to dress up for silly events like Christmas and Halloween. I put my foot down for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s and Easter…although I do love chasing rabbits. -Patricia D. 2. Dutch is a three-year-old Toy Australian Shepherd that we’ve had since he was eight weeks old. He came to live with me as a stray when he appeared at my doorstep in January 2019. I was in the process of moving into my new home and he walked in, went up the stairs, and into my bedroom to lie down. I am sure he was delivered to me via the famous cat distribution system. Since then we have traveled extensively, and spent last August together in Amsterdam. His favorite pastime was laying on the front picture window watching the bicyclists whiz by! -Sherry S. 4. This is Boone, our 10 month old English Setter. We got him in November when he was seven months old. Our last dog passed away in June and around October we decided we were ready for another dog. We looked at lots of pups but when we saw Boone and his cool markings, we knew he was the one! He’s the coolest, chillest dog ever! -Anne M. 1 3 2 4 ARCADIA ARCADIA ''S PETS S PETS Would you like to share your pet? 5 APRIL 2024 By Rachael Bouley Earlier this year, 14 teams made up of 27 high schoolers from across Phoenix – including 14 from Arcadia High, Xavier Prep, PCDS and Brophy Prep – raised an incredible $780,221 for the 2024 Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Student Visionaries campaign. LLS chapters across the country benefit from Student Visionaries of the Year, a philanthropic leadership development opportunity where teams raise money over seven weeks. Funds support the nonprofit’s research initiatives in the search for a cure for blood cancer. Students also promote awareness for leukemia and lymphoma and how to best support those affected by the debilitating diseases. Three Xavier groups participated this year, including first runner-up Team Work for the Cure, led by Kennedy Frakes and Lucia Sugich, who raised over $164,000. The Dreams Beyond Cancer team was second runner-up, with Jacquie Vogel and Maryam Al Qaderi raising $109,000 and winning the Patient Education and Support Mission Pillar Award. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, knowing how much of an impact we can have in curing blood cancers,” Jacquie said. “Seeing how much we collectively raised and hearing stories from our honored hero Morgan and survivors’ stories from donors was unforgettable, and knowing I played a part in the world coming to a day without cancer was the same.” Jacquie saw firsthand the direct impact of cancer on patients and their families when she volunteered at Barrow Neurological Institute and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. “This fueled me to be a part of the drive – and when I become a doctor, to not have to tell anyone they have cancer will be amazing,” Jacquie added. “I hope to continue with the organization through leadership and recommend this experience to others as I grow in my leadership skills while making so many connections.” Jacquie’s teammate Maryam was similarly inspired to make a difference through Dreams Beyond Cancer after volunteering at the Mayo Clinic and Dignity Health Cancer Institute. “I saw the courage and strength of doctors, nurses, cancer patients, and their families facing challenging times,” Maryam said. “Participating in this program provided me an opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of cancer patients as a high school student and inspired me to pursue my dream of becoming an oncologist and cancer researcher.” Xavier was also represented by Savannah Farr on Team Coast 2 Coast Cures, who, alongside Dylan Yeung and Sophia Bosch, raised over $200,000, winning the title of Phoenix Student Visionaries of the Year. During this year’s campaign, Arcadia juniors McKenzie Levitz and Mollie Broucek and sophomore Kennedy Hunter raised over $45,000 for Team Hope Heals. “We chose this name because we truly do believe that hope can help you through anything,” McKenzie said. “We reached out to companies, friends and family, local to Arizona and all over the country.” Team Hope Heals embraced this opportunity to make a difference and feels inspired to support more charitable causes. “We are so proud of all 14 teams and are so thankful to LLS for this amazing opportunity,” Mollie Broucek said. Each team was invited to an awards ceremony in March to celebrate their accomplishment.
