20 JANUARY 2024 C hris Cohn is passionate about health and wellness, though by his own admission, he has traveled a less-than-conventional road to get to where he is today. The Phoenix native founded Scottsdale Recovery Center and Arizona Addiction Center in 2009 after having a bout with substance abuse. And just last year, he opened Daytryp Health Center in Arcadia. “I had my own kind of struggle with substances after getting addicted to pain pills for a serious back injury,” the 45-year-old entrepreneur said. “Once I got past that, I dedicated myself to helping others.” Cohn became clean in 2007 and opened a drug rehabilitation facility. Seven more followed throughout the Valley. He created the educational curriculum from scratch, and today, it is lauded by industry professionals as one of the more effective recovery programs. “We had a great 14-year run and helped thousands of people along the way,” Cohn said. “I’m very proud of that.” Cohn attended Brophy Prep and went on to the University of Arizona, earning a degree in sociology and psychology. Fifteen years later, he obtained a master’s degree in counseling from Grand Canyon University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. “It’s kind of crazy that I did so well in college because I was never a good student growing up,” Cohn admitted. “Sports was all I was really interested in, and I played just about everything. As an adult, I’ve kept my passion alive by coaching.” Before getting into rehabilitative medicine, Cohn worked as a stockbroker in L.A., then moved home and became a wealth manager. “Honestly, I had little or no passion for either job,” he said. After selling the Scottsdale Recovery Center in 2020, he began investigating the efficacy of psychedelic and plant-based medicines for his own healing. “The future of mental health healing is in these medicines,” he said, “and we have some of the best doctors, nurses and psychologists working at Daytryp.” Ketamine therapy is legal, and Cohn said it has been effective in treating people with trauma, grief, anxiety and depression. The great majority of their clientele are military veterans and first responders who are dealing with post- traumatic syndrome. “The results have been profound, and we’ve seen everyone from suicidal children to former Navy Seals to people in hospice care,” Cohn said. He inherited an entrepreneurial spirit from his father, Lee, who founded Big Four Restaurants, a popular company in the valley throughout the 70s and 80s. Cohn’s first job was washing dishes at Oscar Taylor’s. “I’m super non-interpersonal, so that was probably the best spot for me,” he laughed. His father is his mentor and best friend, and Cohn said he has learned more from him than in any classroom. “Everyone respects my dad, and he, in turn, treats them with respect. I don’t know anyone who does a better job of living in the moment, something I’m still learning to do,” Cohn said. He enjoys yoga, meditation, and going to the gym when he isn’t working. His favorite past-time is fishing with his father at their ranch in Wisconsin, and he references a Henry David Thoreau quote to share some of his philosophy about life: “Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” Chris Cohn FOUR Properties Coming Soon.
