Universal Studios Japan has been continuing to break its own record every year for “the most lights on an artificial Christmas tree” since 2011. In 2022, Joel Strasser won the Guinness World Record for “most baubles in a beard” by hooking 710 mini-ornaments in his facial hair. Strasser is a serial record- breaker and has achieved multiple World Record titles by putting various items in his beard. The record for the world’s largest Christmas stocking hasn’t been broken since 2017. The honor was bestowed to the Sedalia, Missouri, community after they rolled out a stocking that was 177 feet long and 72 feet wide. Merchants hoping to attract potential customers to their shops before and after Christmas church services would carve intricate shapes into the radishes’ skin – nativity scenes, local wildlife, architecture or vegetables and other relevant displays. Locals bought the most intricate offerings to use as Christmas centerpieces. In 1897, Oaxaca’s then-mayor turned the radish-carving tradition into an official celebration, declaring December 23 the official Night of the Radishes – and the contest has been going strong since. The radishes used in the Noche de Rabanos carvings are larger than normal (some as heavy as six pounds!) and are not meant to be eaten. The creator of the best radish design wins 12,000 pesos – around $215. There are dozens of towns across the U.S. with names inspired by the holidays: North Pole, NY; Rudolph, WI; Christmas, AZ; and Eggnog, UT, are just a few. Icelandic tradition tells of a cat who eats anyone who isn’t dressed well enough to handle harsh winter weather. In Iceland, families celebrate by coming together to protect one another and ensure nobody gets taken by the Christmas Yule Cat. Welsh people participate in the Mari Lwyd (“Gray Mare”) tradition, where a group of carolers will sing and then challenge the homeowner to a battle of rhyming insults in Welsh.
