44 DECEMBER 2023 By Mallory Gleich The Arcadia News scholarship was created in 2004 by publisher Greg Bruns as a way to encourage the pursuit of journalism or a related field. Since then, Arcadia News has gifted over $15,000 to graduating seniors. Solomon is the 29th recipient. Always one to help break the tension of a stressful day, Solomon Riccio is an Arcadia High graduate who is taking his experiences from high school and applying them to his newest adventure as an Arizona State University freshman. Solomon said he’s looking forward to learning new skills and ideas that he can use later in the professional world. He’s pursuing a digital marketing degree. “I want to tap into the digital side of selling a product or service for a business,” he said. “Having a social media presence is important today, and I want to help contribute to that.” While attending Arcadia, Solomon was involved in the Student Equity & Inclusion Club, Votech TV and played baseball with the Titans for four years. He also anchored the school-run news program, Arcadia News Network, for three years. “Solomon was a proud student, willing to be the face of the program. His love of campus, the people and his ability to be professional lead him to be one of the best speakers Arcadia has seen,” AHS Film Teacher Luis Peralta said. “His consistent nature and willingness to take on projects made him an adored member of our News Network.” “That was a great experience. I’ve had media aspirations for as long as I can remember and loved watching SportsCenter as a kid. I was fascinated by the people at the anchor desk,” Solomon said. While he misses seeing the familiar faces of his friends in the hallways and classrooms at Arcadia, he said that he looks forward to reuniting with them over the holidays. He’s also excited about what ASU has in store. “College allows for a change of scenery and new perspectives that will help me grow. Although my major isn’t journalism, I believe digital marketing and journalism go hand in hand,” Solomon said. “The objective of both is to tell a story across communities, which is the ultimate goal in my eventual career.” Along with that goal, he’s excited to gain new skills, keep a strong work ethic, and grow his network with people everywhere. He credits his former film and media teachers – Mr. Peralta and Mr. Luse – for helping grow his love of journalism and media. “They are outstanding. Mr. Luse and Mr. Peralta have left an everlasting impact on my life regarding the media world,” Solomon said.
