33 DECEMBER 2023 By Shi Bradley As a part of World Kindness Week, which is unofficially recognized November 13-19, Tavan Elementary students were encouraged to donate various food and hygiene items to a Valley charity called Gathering Humanity. “With World Kindness Week, Tavan was looking for a new way to model the word – it’s something we’re continually doing. We thought the drive would be a good way to teach kindness to our students and show them the physical impact,” Tavan educator Ellen Young said. The school chose to partner with Gathering Humanity due to its proximity and its work with vulnerable populations in the Phoenix area. “It was important that we gave back to a place where we knew where everything was going,” Young said. “That way, our students can see the difference they are making within their community.” Gathering Humanity is a volunteer-based organization that provides food and necessities to populations experiencing vulnerable conditions. Its main focuses are refugees who are resettling, immigrants seeking asylum, children who have aged out of the foster care system, women in domestic violence situations, and those experiencing homelessness. When Young contacted the organization about the World Kindness event, she was met with positive, enthusiastic responses. Additionally, Tavan is partnering with local churches to donate everyday household items to members of their community. “We partnered with two churches, Arcadia City Church and the Church of Latter Day Saints, and donated things like side table lamps, clocks, things that are helpful for those finding new places to live,” Young said. “The churches fall within our school’s boundaries, so that’s a fun thing, seeing the different ways local community organizations choose to get involved.” Tavan’s future goals include continuing to partner with local charities and donating resources to the local community, which they achieve through a variety of events. “We partnered with Feeding Students USA around Thanksgiving and hosted a food drive,” Young said, “where we collected around 300 pounds of food. The drive helped feed 45 Arcadia families and 125 families throughout SUSD.” Young hopes the experience is inspiring for the students and encourages them to continue spreading kindness and get involved with the community. “Every little bit helps,” Young said. “The kids can see the difference they are making when they bring in cans. Last year, they brought in twice what was expected, which was awesome. But we want to let them know they’re doing a good thing no matter what.” Tavan’s Kindness Week
