The tournament was organized into two brackets: middle school and high school. On the first court were 19 middle school teams. They played 36 single games in a double-elimination bracket. The games were fast-paced and exciting, according to Traci Trigueros- Dubina, who has volunteered at the tournament for three years. “Most games were done in roughly two minutes,” she said. “The LVPD (Las Vegas Police Department) team won first place for middle school, beating out two of last year’s top three middle school teams.” On the second court, ten high school teams played 18 matches. The winners advanced in the double-elimination bracket by winning the best of three. “Games were set to two minutes and often ended up in sudden death matches to break ties,” Traci said. Sudden death matches play out like this: If both teams have the same number of players on the court at the end of the game, both teams will reset for overtime. Captains may pick themselves plus one player, or the captain may alternatively choose two players to play for one minute. Two balls will be on the reset line for each team. The high school winner was Globo Gym, who has held the winning title for the last three years. The first through third-place teams in both brackets won trophies crafted by a Veritas mom. Costumes were an important part of the tournament. Traci explained that in addition to the dodgeball games, teams were awarded for costume design. “Gift certificates were awarded for best team ensemble. The Pink Panthers won for middle school, and the Angry Bananas won for high school,” she said. The seniors also hosted a concession stand during the event. Funds raised went toward their senior trip, which takes place in the spring in Washington, D.C. “Student volunteer hours help determine funding. Money raised also supports special events throughout senior year,” Parent and Chair Kris Kainass said. “It’s a great way for kids to experience how hard work and caring for the community yields a win for all. The seniors are so grateful for the support.” Entrance fees went to prizes and t-shirts for the winning teams. Traci said that since the dodgeball tournament is the first event of the school year at Veritas, it also helps break the ice between students, teachers, and staff. “I love this event. It’s spearheaded by the VPSO and run by volunteers as families and friends watch from the stands,” Traci said. “Every year, it gets better as everyone gets to know each other more. This event gets us charged up and going for the year ahead.” At the homecoming pep rally in September, the LVPD team and Globo Gym played each other for a final hurrah, with the ultimate victory going to Globo Gym.
