COFFEE Coffee is thought to date back to 800 A.D. when it was discovered by ninth-century goat herders on the Ethiopian plateau. Legend says a goat herder named Kaldi first discovered the potential of the beans. He noticed that after eating the berries from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night. Kaldi reported his findings to the local monastery, who made a drink with the berries and found that it kept them alert through the long hours of evening prayer. The monastery shared the discovery with other monks, and news of the energizing berries began to spread. Kopi Luwak is the world’s most exclusive coffee – and it’s made with animal feces. Kopi is the Indonesian word for coffee, and Luwak is the Indonesian word for a small ferret-like animal resembling a cat. It costs $150 to $600 a pound. Kopi Luwak is often called cat poop coffee – but it actually comes from the partially-digested excretions of the Indonesian palm civet. The outer layer of the coffee bean is removed during processing, and the remaining beans are completely cleaned before being roasted. Americans drink 146 billion cups of coffee a year, on average. Remarkably, this only lands the U.S. at 25th on the list of worldwide annual coffee consumption. Seventy-four percent of Americans drink coffee every day, and 49 percent of those people drink three to five cups. Thirty- two percent purchase from a coffee shop one to three days a week, with others spending $20 or less a month. Cold brew isn’t a new fad. In fact, it dates back to the 1600s. The Japanese had already been cold brewing tea when Dutch trading ships introduced the beverage as a way to transport and make coffee that did not require “dangerous fire.” Today, Japanese or Kyoto-style coffee is made by letting water slowly drip over coffee grounds in glass jars. DID YOU KNOW? COFFEE WHERE DID YOU GET THAT COFFEE? Most believe that Kopi Luwak coffee was the only type that used animal feces to enhance the flavor, but an innovative coffee producer from Thailand uses elephant feces to create its coffee. Arabica coffee cherries are fed to the Ivory Coffee Company’s elephants, which pass through the digestive system and are collected from the feces. The elephant dung coffee is said to have a strong taste – and costs $1,500 a pound! In Arizona, drinkers prefer plain black coffee or cold brew. And in Phoenix, a popular mix is coffee with orange juice. Coffee is the world’s second-largest traded commodity – its worth is over $100 billion worldwide. Crude oil is first. For a long time, Hawaii was the only U.S. state able to grow coffee beans. They’ve been doing so since before 1959 when it became a state. Recently, though, California has also started growing coffee bushes. During the 17th century Ottoman Empire, coffee was believed to contain mind- altering effects, and thus it was banned from public consumption. In 16th century Constantinople, not providing your wife with enough coffee was grounds for divorce. The Italian word espresso means “expressed” or “forced out.” Espresso is made by forcing very hot water under high pressure through finely ground, compacted coffee. Coffee “beans” are not beans. They are actually the pit of a berry, which makes them a fruit. There are two varieties – green and red. According to the International Coffee Organization, adults in Finland consume 27.5 pounds of coffee per year. In comparison, the average American only drinks 11. Young people are almost twice as likely to consume a coffee beverage at lunchtime than someone over 60. Nearly 60 percent of coffee served in the United States is brewed from premium beans. The National Coffee Association has represented the U.S. coffee industry from “crop to cup” since 1911, making it one of the oldest trade associations in the states.
