GRAND CANYON Grand Canyon National Park includes over a million acres of land – 1,218,375.54 acres, or 1,904 square miles, to be exact. Most people measure along the course of the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon, making the Grand Canyon 277 miles long. A trip to the bottom of the Canyon and back is a two-day journey. From the rim to the floor of the canyon is 5,000 feet. On June 23, 2013, 34-year-old aerialist Nik Wallenda became the first person to walk a high wire across the Little Colorado River Gorge near Grand Canyon National Park. Wallenda wasn’t wearing a safety harness as he made the quarter-mile traverse on a two-inch-thick steel cable 1,500 feet above the gorge. The odds of dying from falling off the rim of the Grand Canyon are 1 in 1.8 million. Since the 1800s, about 900 people have died in the Grand Canyon, mostly from airplane or helicopter crashes.
