4 OCTOBER 2023 — – — – — – EDITOR’S NOTE Every October, I tell myself that this is the year I will check out a haunted house. I investigate which ones have the best backstory, and as my mouse hovers over the “buy tickets” button, I stop. I’m the person who gets scared when someone comes around a corner – even if I know they are there – so maybe this is a bad idea. I’ll try again next year. For those who aren’t scaredy-cats like myself, we’ve got a list of haunted houses ready for frightening, and our calendar contains family-friendly Halloween events with costumes and candy aplenty. This edition is full of Arcadia area student-athletes making names in the mountain biking, golf and tennis arenas. Arcadian Vessa Turley started her junior year with a doubles championship win at the USTA’s Billie Jean King National Championships. Vessa has competed nationally and internationally and claimed titles from the Eddie Herr Tournament and Winter Clay Nationals in the U.S. and ITF Titles in Mexico, Guatemala and Peru. Over the next few months, she will head to Chile, Argentina, South Korea and more to pursue her reign as a tennis champ. We also feature a story on teen singer Izzy Mahoubi, whose indie-pop tunes have made it to music platforms thanks to her debut EP. Izzy started singing in restaurants and coffee shops before performing on multiple Phoenix stages. “Her love of music, work ethic and dedication is truly something to see,” Izzy’s dad said. “When she hits that stage with a fire and passion, it draws you in from the first note and doesn’t let you go for the entire set.” We’re excited to unveil our next edition of Arcadia Home & Design in November and, of course, keep you updated on all the fun holiday goings-on in the near future. When you sit down, he will immediately come over and demand pets. Shadow is quiet and shy, but so sweet when you get to know him. The brothers have been the perfect addition to our family for four years now, and we love everything about them, even the “presents” they leave at the door. – Avery and Charlotte L. 2. He is the sweetest most loving puppy and enjoys swimming, playing with his tennis ball, and greeting everybody in the neighborhood. We’ve always got her back. Curly is a 3-year-old Cavapoo that made her way from Pennsylvania into our arms! She is full of love and energy.
