DID YOU KNOW? STAMPS PAINT OR WATERCOLOR? In the early 90s, America was asked to vote on the artwork for the Elvis Presley stamp, which came out in 1993. The choice was between a watercolor of the youthful Elvis by Mark Stutzman, or a more mature Elvis painted by John Berkey. The reactions to the voting process were good and bad. Members of Congress debated the worthiness of Elvis as a stamp subject, newspaper editorialists printed their opinions, and presidential candidate Bill Clinton voiced his support for the younger Elvis. Comedians and cartoonists poked fun at the Postal Service, the 1992 presidential candidates, even Elvis himself. Ballots were distributed around the country. America spoke, returning nearly 1.2 million ballots to the Postal Service, and the choice was clear: More than 75 percent of voters preferred young Elvis. The stamp was dedicated at Graceland on January 8, 1993: Elvis’s 58th birthday. A decade later, the Elvis stamp is still one of the most talked-about stamps ever issued by the Postal Service, and the most popular U.S. commemorative stamp of all time. All 50 states have been commemorated on postage stamps. They are each honored in 50 year increments from the state’s inception date. The Stamp Fulfillment Service facility in Kansas City, MO is located in a limestone cave 150 feet underground. The consistent temperatures and humidity levels allow the stamps to be kept in mint-quality condition. The first woman to appear on a U.S. postage stamp was Queen Isabella in 1893, and the first American woman on a stamp was Martha Washington in 1902. People once had to pay for the postage on the letters they received, which resulted in a lot of mail being returned because the recipient didn’t want to spend the money. Prepaid postage stamps, introduced in 1847, solved this problem. In 1992, pressure-sensitive, self-adhesive stamps were introduced nationally. By 2005, 98 percent of all stamps were this type. The American Philatelic Society has more than 27,000 members. A postage stamp was inside the New Horizons spacecraft that flew by Pluto in July 2015. That’s more than 3 billion miles away from earth! By Mykenzei Douglas Customers who have stopped into Case Study Coffee Lounge on 16th Street and Pierson have described it as warm and comfortable. The furniture and decor show excellent craftsmanship – and they should, since almost everything was built by woodworker William Douglas, whose job titles now include owner and manager of the coffee shop. The name stems from Douglas’s woodworking career. His business, as he describes it, is primarily content creation, education, and sponsorship-based, so he was able to do things that weren’t necessarily practical for the average woodworker. “I created things for the good of the craft, as a ‘case study’ experiment,” Douglas said. “The name Case Study was sketched out on a napkin while I was eating lunch shortly after finishing a project.” Though most well-known for his woodworking, Douglas had to step away from his passion after receiving life-altering news. He would often get terrible migraines that would last several hours – sometimes up to 24 – at a time. After seeing several specialists, neurologists and lung doctors, Douglas saw an allergist. He discovered something heartbreaking: he had developed an allergy to most trees. Douglas had been involved in the industry for a decade, and he decided that this newly developed health condition wouldn’t stop him from sharing the passion for timeless craft and design. He started to consider other possibilities – and one idea, centered around his furniture showroom – took hold. “The café was available for clients at the showroom, when they were there to commission me to create a piece,” Douglas said. “Once my allergy developed, I saw an opportunity to reach more people through craft – and coffee,” he said. Five months after that fated appointment, Case Study opened in Phoenix. “Most specialty coffee shops compete to have the best and most unique roasted bean. I believe we all have access to great coffee, so I’m not joining that race,” Douglas said. “Our focus is on hospitality and interior design.” The lounge contains some of Douglas’s most prized designs, including his most well- known project, the Kodee-Three chair, and a bench and coffee table set from his Nara collection. Douglas’s wife makes the coffee syrups from scratch, including Case Study’s original flavor, Vanilla and Rosemary. Espresso, Americano, cappuccino and other classic drinks are available, along with signature coffee drinks like the Peachy Keen Cold Brew with vanilla cold foam and a peach ring. The coffee shop also offers a selection of food, like the savory crepe with applewood- smoked ham, brown sugar and an arugula salad. Another popular item is avocado toast with goat cheese and lime-soaked onions. The overnight oats contain a vegan oat mix with chia seeds, sliced almonds, shredded coconut, and blueberries.
