42 SEPTEMBER 2023 By Rachael Bouley The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is a leader and advocate for high school athletics nationwide. The organization serves over 19,000 high schools with a goal of “ensuring that students have an opportunity to enjoy participation, achievement and good sportsmanship in education-based activities.” Within the NFHS is the National High School Sports Hall of Fame, which was started in 1982 to honor high school athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and others for their achievements in high school sports. Thus far, over 500 people have been awarded, and as of 2023, Xavier Prep’s Sister Lynn Winsor became one of five coaches inducted into the NFHS Hall of Fame. Since Sister Lynn is coming up on her anniversary of 50 years at Xavier, this honor is all the more earned. “I am incredibly humbled. First, because there are hundreds of coaches all over this country who have done extraordinary work for many years,” she said. “Second, the school administrators, coaches I’ve worked with, student-athletes, and parents empowered me to receive this award.” As the school’s long-time golf coach, Sister Lynn has helped the Gators secure 37 state titles over the past five decades. While she loves winning, she said what matters most is teaching sportsmanship, teamwork, and good values. “Our mission is to prepare young women of faith with the knowledge, skills, and integrity to meet the challenges of a changing global society in a positive and productive manner while celebrating unity – and that’s the overriding coaching philosophy I embody,” Sister Lynn said. Her lifelong commitment to Xavier was celebrated among the class of 2023 at the Hall of Fame induction during the NFHS Summer Meeting in Seattle. “The Hall of Fame ceremony was beautiful,” Sister Lynn said. “Eight of my religious sisters from my order, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and four of my athletic staff members attended.” Former teachers who now live in Seattle also came out to support the award-winning administrator and coach, who credits her principals and assistant coaches with making the golf program a success. “A coach, even more so than a teacher, can have a huge impact on students. We get to see them interacting with peers, having fun, competing, and practicing,” Sister Lynn said. “We have an advantage in getting to know them because we can infuse Xavier’s philosophy and mission in a more relaxed setting.” After growing up playing softball, basketball, and volleyball, Sister Lynn began teaching physical education at Xavier in 1974. She took over golf coaching duties and found a true passion for supporting students both academically and athletically. “As a coach, I’m proud of how many girls have been on my teams and gone on to successful careers. We’ve had eight students reach the LGPA,” Sister Lynn said. Now moving into the assistant golf coach role as Tui Selvaratnam takes over, Sister Lynn is thankful for an amazing career and for becoming the first religious sister to receive the NFHS Hall of Fame Award. “That’s remarkable because most sisters are not coaches,” she said. “I’m fortunate that the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary have been very supportive of my being a coach and administering Xavier’s athletic program.” Xavier coach inducted into National High School Hall of Fame AIA Executive Director David Hines joined Sister Lynn Winsor on stage at the Hall of Fame celebration.
