4 SEPTEMBER 2023 — – — – — – EDITOR’S NOTE When I was a child, my parents enrolled me in tap dancing classes, and I lasted maybe a week before deciding those “clicky shoes” weren’t for me. Soccer and gymnastics had that same reaction. No, eight- year-old me was content to sit in my room, making up dance moves and dreaming about being the next Mariah Carey. One Arcadia resident – Veritas Prep sophomore Kalyani Bhatnagar – could be considered my opposite, especially when it comes to dancing. I never made it to the stage, but Kalyani did, and this August she celebrated a coming of age-type performance with friends and family cheering her on in the audience. For the past ten years, Kalyani has studied Bharatanatyam, an Indian classical style of dancing. Her hard work culminated in the Arangetram, a 90-minute performance of nine separate dances – each with its own steps, music, costumes and meaning. Kalyani said the three-hour event was powerful and full of emotion. On the flip side, aspiring musicians can check out the School of Rock, which opened an Arizona location in our backyard at 28th St. and Indian School. The music school offers programs for little rockers, teens and adults. We’re excited to show you the annual summer vacation photo spread. This year had a record number of submissions! It’s evident that Arcadians love to travel – and take summer vacation seriously. Families spent time on boats and paddleboards, surfing the waves, visiting historical monuments and enjoying the scenery. You all traveled the world this summer – we’re glad you’re back home with us. I’m 2.5 years old and I was rescued from the Maricopa County Pound. – David and Adriana J. 3. Tank is 10 years old, loves life and also loves yodeling. Spike is eight weeks old and all in on our 5:30 a.m. summer walks. He loves his big brother Tank and the feeling is mutual! – Monique and David R. 4. We adopted Dutch 15 years ago from AAWL. He was just a couple months old and was the sweetest of the bunch. His name was Courage, and our 3-year- old daughter pronounced his name “curr-dutch,” so we named him Dutch. He loves to go camping with us on the Mogollon Rim, where he runs freely in the meadows. He has been the greatest blessing, protector and companion.
