22 SEPTEMBER 2023 By Rachael Bouley Arcadia resident Kevin Riley is passionate about seeing the world from new heights. As the self-proclaimed “hiking golfer,” he uses a Ping 2-iron as his walking stick on adventures near and far. Riley has been hiking for six years, and it all began as a personal challenge. “It started when one of my golf partners asked me, ‘Have you ever heard of the Camino?’ I hadn’t,” Riley recalled of the famous Spanish trail. “I researched it and thought I wasn’t ready to hike for 32 days, but if I started training, I could handle 16.” Riley proved to himself that he could handle it – and has hiked or walked every day since. These days, it’s not just to stay in shape. He’s been active all his life, having shared the same passion for golf as his dad and even winning a father/son competition back in the day. He was using the 2-iron at his games a few years ago but then it found a different purpose. “I couldn’t hit with it, so the iron became my pacifier when I hike,” Riley said. “I even gave it a nickname. I get a lot of comments walking around the neighborhood with Deuce.” Now, Riley and his trusted companion travel the Southwest and beyond, crossing famous hiking trails off a growing bucket list. Escudilla Mountain, with an elevation of 10,940 feet, is one of Riley’s favorite hiking spots. He also recommends the White Mountains, Mogollon Rim, and Horton Creek near Kohl’s Ranch. After conquering some of the local mountains, Riley took his hiking hobby international and headed to Spain in May 2019. “The Camino de Santiago is a bucket list hike. I met several ‘Camino Angels’ that I still keep in touch with,” Riley said. His journey started in León, Spain and ended in Finisterre, spanning about 230 miles over 20 days. He experienced firsthand how the saying “the Camino will provide” rings true. “I lost my phone in Finisterre and figured I’d never see it again, but 62 days later, it showed up in my mailbox,” Riley said. “Camino Angels exist; these things really do happen.” After crossing the historic trail, he returned overseas in 2023 to hike Scotland’s 65-mile Fife Coastal Pass. “It was a pilgrimage of sorts,” Riley explained. “What golfer wouldn’t like to hike from Edinburgh to St. Andrews, the ‘Home of Golf’? My only disappointment was I didn’t get to play the Old Course at St. Andrews. I tried for two days with no luck.” As his two biggest hikes so far, these global adventures have taught Riley about the importance of research, planning, and training. He encourages others to get their steps in, chat with fellow hikers, and factor in the net elevation change between rolling hills and steep grades. “I’m not so much a through-hiker as a distance walker. If I could plan to hike the Camino at 60, after sitting at a desk for almost 30 years, anyone can do it!” Riley said. “Don’t be afraid to get out and experience life. Over the last several years, we’ve been taught to live in fear, so if you want to do something, do it before it’s too late.” Riley is already pondering his next hike with Deuce by his side. Camino do Mar and Camino Ingles in Spain, and the Kumano Kodo in Japan, are two possibilities for 2024. No matter where he goes, Riley looks forward to seeing the world from a new perspective and hopes others do the same.
