SEPTEMBER 2023 16 with Leah Huss, co-owner of Huss Brewing L eah and Jeff Huss combined two things to make their award-winning product: a love of family and a love of beer. The husband and wife team have over 30 years of brewing experience in the Valley and pride themselves on their product and the growth of the Huss Brewing family. Where are you originally from? My husband and I both grew up in Illinois. I had two uncles who have lived in Arizona since the 50s, so this has always been our family spot. I’ve been here for 27 years and consider myself a native. We’d had one of the worst winters the year I moved here. I found myself at work looking at the weather page in USA Today because we didn’t have weather apps back then [ laughs ]; I’d look at that and think, ‘What am I doing here?’ That’s when I decided to move. What did you do before starting Huss? I went to Scottsdale Culinary Institute and was cocktailing at a brewery in North Scottsdale. When I got out of school, it was the middle of summer, and I needed to complete my externship, but I could not find a job because Phoenix restaurants and resorts all went to half-staff during the summer months. I reached out to a friend, and he mentioned a brand-new place opening in Papago Plaza called Papago Brewing. I walked in on their second day of business, and before the week’s end, I was running the place. I was there for 15 years. How did you and Jeff meet? We grew up 45 minutes from each other in Illinois, and Jeff moved down here to become a brewer at BJ’s in Chandler. We met through beer! I was working at Papago, and he was at BJ’s when we discovered we were having our daughter. We realized we wanted to start something that would become a legacy for our family. The Tempe Huss location opened in August 2013. This is our 10th anniversary. It’s wild. It feels like yesterday but also like an eternity ago. What’s it like to celebrate 10 years? It feels very strange. When we started the whole project, the point was to make a legacy for our daughter, provide a better quality of life for her, and be there for her. All of that happened, but the cool thing is that we have this ‘family first’ motto within the business, transcending everyone who works here. To see single people who are now married, people who now have kids. I don’t know that this industry breeds ‘family first’ – we knew we didn’t want to be like a revolving door of human resources. So we’ve concentrated on providing a quality of life and implementing room for growth. Elisa Nolan, our first-ever employee, has been here from day one. She started as a bartender, and now she’s our marketing director. How will you celebrate? We are going to run a Willy Wonka-style golden ticket promotion. We’ve hidden ten golden tickets in six- and 12-packs of Scottsdale Blonde and Papago Orange Blossom. People can win factory tours, beer for a year, or a swag basket. They’re redeemable until October 1! Tell us about the other Huss locations. The Tempe one is where we brew all of our beers. The Uptown Plaza location on Central and Camelback is our second location. It was our first foray into food. I did food at Papago forever, so when we opened the Camelback location in 2017, we decided to get back into it. We wanted that to be our first neighborhood gathering place. In the spring of last year, we opened at the Convention Center across from Herberger Theater. That’s a super cool project because it was a joint venture with Local First. What was your family’s reaction when you decided to go into brewing? At first, I think my family was like, ‘Wait, what do you mean you’re not going to just cook?’ But that was also half of my program at school. You learn everything about the restaurant industry, so it made sense for me. Since then, their perspective has changed. My dad’s not a big risk taker, so he was nervous when I left my job, when we were just starting. Jeff’s family was a little nervous, too, because it’s not a traditional field. His dad’s a doctor. His brother worked in medical supply, so he wasn’t following suit. I remember the day he told his uncle that I was going to work at Huss full time, and he goes, ‘That just doesn’t sound like the best idea, Jeff.’ [ laughs ] It all worked out. How did your husband get into brewing? Jeff went to Purdue and got a sales and management degree, then moved to Chicago and sold insurance for one summer. He hated it, so he went to the Siebel Institute and Doemens Academy. The first part of the program is at Goose Island Brewery in Chicago, and the second is in Germany. He learned how to brew beer in Germany and then came back and started looking for a job, and that’s how he ended up in Arizona. PHOENIX 100 E. Camelback Road • TEMPE 1520 W.
