Free e-newsletter SNAP HERE arcadianews.com/newsletters or visit By Jennifer Marshall Higher Octave Healing, a nonprofit that provides music therapy services to folks around the Valley, recently debuted its first annual virtual Battle of the Bands competition – a month-long process that resulted in multiple groups singing and dancing to their favorite songs. Higher Octave Healing’s passion and objective is to share music therapy and its benefits with the community. The nonprofit was established in 2010. “Our trained music therapists work with children in special education programs, older adults in memory care and assisted living, adults with disabilities at various community sites and in mental health and addiction recovery settings,” Clinical Manager Sarah Melton said. According to Melton, music therapy addresses a variety of cognitive, motor, communication and psychosocial needs for people of all ages. “In our Rock Band program, adults and teens with disabilities work on life skills and social goals, such as following complex directions and interacting appropriately with fellow band members,” Melton said. “The experiences of choosing music, planning and learning to play instruments naturally hone their cognitive skills.” Battle of the Bands is a new concept added to the repertoire of Octave’s already successful music therapy program. Fourteen rock bands, comprised of teens and adults with disabilities, got together to come up with songs, dances and props, then competed to raise money for the program. Each band created a music video that premiered at the Pollack Cinemas in Tempe. Fundraising efforts included selling Battle of the Bands t-shirts, a silent auction, donations to ‘vote’ and ticket sales to the watch party. Sixty-one band members, Higher Octave staff, interns, board members and volunteers worked countless hours to make the event a success. The bands performed various genres, including oldies, movie soundtracks, rock and country. The instruments varied just as much, from keyboards, guitars, bass, drums, and even a ukulele. The band Disney Pop Rock won the battle after receiving the most votes. “They got to interview with a local news show, their photo was placed on a guitar to be hung in the rock band room and they received the title of the first Battle of the Bands Champions! Everyone was truly a winner, with over $11,000 raised for the rock band program,” Melton said. SROs are valuable for many reasons, not the least of which is the connections they make with our students. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard of a student being able to confide in an SRO when they needed help with a situation. These relationships matter, and I am thankful that we are considering this when making decisions about the future of our schools. SROs provide a presence that allows students and parents to feel safer, as well as a resource that administrators and teachers can turn to in time of need. As we look for partnerships to fully staff these positions, I know that we will look to be creative. Residents have stressed the importance of this issue and I want to reaffirm that both myself and my fellow councilmembers will be working diligently to provide a safe learning environment for our children.
