Jones was born and raised in the Windy City. In 1971, he and some friends started hanging around with the wrong crowd, so Jones’ wife – who worked at a junior college – suggested he come down and see if returning to school could help him change his environment. It not only did that; it helped him find his passion and a new career path as a professional jazz musician, educator and nonprofit director. Jones is the front man of his own band that he still plays with today – though only for special events and festivals. His first record – Brass Wind – was produced in 1974 under Jones’ recording label, Niambi Records, named after his first-born child that he and his wife lost to a drunk driver. In 1986, Jones packed up his family and headed to Phoenix. He played various venues while also playing with Margo and Bucko Reed, artists who were eventually inducted into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame. He also played with a few Latin bands here and there. In 2008, Jones opened a club on Central Avenue and Camelback Road called Doc’s Place, which ruled the music scene until 2012. Unable to complete some necessary renovations, the club closed and Jones decided to head to the birthplace of jazz – New Orleans – to start a publishing company and 504 Magazine, which centers on all things blues, jazz and music. While in Nola, Jones met world-famous jazz pianist Herbie Hancock. It was a suggestion from Hancock that would compel Jones to an action that would change the face of jazz in Phoenix. “I met Herbie at the first celebration of Jazz Day. We are both from Chicago and both went to Roosevelt University. He told me that, being I am a musician and a publisher, it was a must that I get involved with the International Jazz Day movement,” Jones said. He moved back to Phoenix and successfully lobbied for a bill declaring April as Jazz Appreciation Month and April 30 as International Jazz Day. The first festival was held at Cityscape in 2013. Among his many accomplishments – starting the festival, earning a degree in music education, and helping raise a family of five – one of his most memorable moments was sharing the stage with music legends The Temptations and Aretha Franklin. “That was one of the highlights of my music career. My cousin was the band leader of The Temptations in 1995, and they needed a saxophone player. I went out with them to Europe. After that, I was glad to come off the road,” he said. “I pride myself on being the bandleader of my group. I was never a good side man.” Eleven years ago, Jones pioneered the Scottsdale Jazz Festival to help bring more of the genre to the Valley. Jones plans to grow the Scottsdale event and make it a destination for jazz lovers. He also continues to help in other arenas, including advocating for musicians. “My purpose from now on is to use my festivals to bring attention to the need for affordable housing for musicians. After the pandemic, many friends and musicians lost their homes due to being out of work,” he said. Jones created an organization called Jazztown USA that helps musicians through a three-step coordinated plan to find housing and work. He is also the Executive Director of the Molina School of Jazz, a public charity that raises awareness and funds music and arts education. Jones helps out with the Wee Jazz program for children 1.5 to 3 years old. He has been married for 54 years; he’s got five children, five grandchildren and one great grandson. When he’s not playing music, he’s hangin’ with the family. “Only one of my children followed me into the music business.
