DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE The text of the Declaration of Independence, from “When in the course of human events” through “our sacred honor,” is approximately 1,320 words long. Some versions of the text have added, subtracted, or changed words. If you include the title, “In Congress, July 4, 1776. The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen United States of America,” the total word count is 1,337, and if you include the names of the 56 signers, the total word count is 1,458. Six men signed both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution: Roger Sherman, George Clymer, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Morris, James Wilson and George Read. Of those, Roger Sherman and Robert Morris signed both those and the Articles of Confederation. In the movie National Treasure , Nicholas Cage’s character claims that the back of the Declaration contains a treasure map with encrypted instructions from the founding fathers, written in invisible ink. Unfortunately, this is not the case. There is, however, a simpler message, written upside-down across the bottom of the signed document: “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.” The first eBook was a copy of the United States Declaration of Independence, which was typed up on a Xerox Sigma V mainframe by University of Illinois student Michael Hart on July 4, 1971. 6 MEN H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H The text of the Declaration of Independence, from “our sacred honor,” is approximately 1,320 words you include the names of the 56 signers, the total word count is 1,458. DID YOU KNOW? DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE MAKING A STATEMENT On July 9, 1776, a copy of the Declaration of Independence had reached New York City. With hundreds of British naval ships occupying New York Harbor, revolutionary spirit and military tensions were running high. When George Washington read the document aloud in front of City Hall, a boisterous crowd cheered on the words, and later that day they tore down a nearby statue of George III. The statue was then melted down and shaped into more than 42,000 musket balls for the new American army. There were 56 cosigners to the Declaration of Independence that came from the 13 colonies. A number of founding fathers – Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin – were among that group. Of those 56 cosigners, eight were born in the United Kingdom. The oldest signer was Benjamin Franklin, who was 70 years old when he wrote his name on the parchment. The youngest was Edward Rutledge, a lawyer from South Carolina who was 26 at the time. Unfortunately, the original draft of Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence has been lost for over two centuries. Some researchers believe it was destroyed during a fire at the State Department in 1800, but there is no evidence to support this theory. Timothy Matlack was a Philadelphia brewer whose patriotism earned him a spot as a delegate to the Continental Congress. As a master penman, he is believed to have hand-lettered the parchment Declaration. The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, but it was not immediately made public. Instead, it was printed and distributed around the colonies, where it was read to people at public gatherings. According to the University of Virginia, the Declaration of Independence was not actually signed on July 4, 1776. The Second Continental Congress adopted it then, but representatives did not sign it until August 2 – nearly a month later. The official Congress printer, John Dunlap, worked all night and into the morning of July 5 to produce the broadside of the Declaration of Independence. A broadside is a large sheet of paper printed on one side. Back then, it was used mostly in Europe to announce events or proclamations, give political views or commentary, or as advertisements. The only names that appear on that first copy are John Hancock, the Congress’ president, and secretary Charles Thomson. In 1989, a Philadelphia man found an original Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration hidden in the back of a picture frame he bought at a flea market for $4. One of the few surviving copies from the official first printing, it was sold for $8.1 million in 2000.
