38 JUNE 2023 By Rachael Bouley A small but mighty high school jazz band from Arcadia recently returned home from their second adventure in New Orleans, Louisiana and the 2023 French Quarter Festival. After attending the cultural celebration last year, the 32nd Street Jazz Band embraced the Big Easy once more, taking in all the sights and sounds at the world’s largest showcase of Louisiana music. Valley music teacher Dave Rowe, who oversees the band, was in attendance and joined 18 local students who play trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, drums, guitar and tuba. “The 40th anniversary French Quarter Festival was attended by 875,000 people. It was just as amazing as ever with all of the bands, entertainment, food and ambiance of New Orleans,” Rowe said. The jazz lovers prepared for their big trip with weekly practices at Dayspring Arcadia Church and performances at the Phoenix Downtown Farmers Market. “Playing at the French Quarter Festival is playing the real thing,” Rowe said. “Performing alongside professional musicians and taking in the culture of New Orleans is experiencing another world. The trip’s highlight was hearing the Jazz All-Star Band at Preservation Hall and visiting with the musicians afterward.” Another memorable moment for the group came on a rainy Saturday afternoon when six musicians found a tree to play under while the festival temporarily shut down. They played their hearts out, attracting a large crowd and earning $600 in tips in 10 minutes! “People were there to hear music, and these guys delivered the entire weekend,” Rowe said. Senior keyboard player and charter band member Tommy Jacobs celebrated his love of music with others who share the feeling. “The festival is a great opportunity not only to learn and enrich one’s understanding and appreciation for jazz music but also foster a sense of expression and individuality,” Tommy said. “I play to express myself and tell a story. It’s one of the purest forms of expression because it says so much of what words can’t, but you know exactly what it means.” Senior tuba and charter member Caleb Humphreys was excited to hear eclectic live music that positively influenced the band. “The event showed examples of the kind of live jazz you don’t get in Phoenix,” Caleb explained. “The people in New Orleans play in a different style that’s so much more real and raw, so I think that inspired our playing a lot.” Since their trip to New Orleans, the band has played at festivals in Scottsdale and Chandler and at events like the Men’s Esthetician Conference. Some members will head to San Francisco in June to play and attend a concert at the SFJAZZ Center before regular practice resumes in the fall. After forming the band in 2021 at the urging of his former students, Rowe is proud of the musicians and everything they’ve accomplished. “The 32nd Street Jazz Band wants everyone to know that jazz music is alive and well,” he said. “The next generation of musicians will see to that.” The group always welcomes new high school members.
