Fortunately, young children in Valley schools can have this interactive experience courtesy of the Loving Literacy Authors (LLA) program. This team comprises seven dedicated full- time authors who share a common passion for literacy and reading. They visit classrooms and participate in traveling book fairs to enrich children’s lives through books. “Our mission is to connect with teachers, librarians and principals to inspire students to read and write,” coordinator and co-founder Debbie Chamberlain said. Each author has a distinct niche, which makes for a well-rounded program. In addition to reading their published books, each author provides lesson plans and curriculum guides that meet one or more of the Arizona State Standards, including STEM topics. School visits range from 45 minutes to an all-day presentation. Rita Goldner covers STEM, water cycle, story writing and book illustrations. Phoebe Fox specializes in friendship and feelings. STEM Life Science, Earth Science and elements of writing are Barbara Renner’s specialties. Debbie Chamberlain covers social- emotional learning and friendship. Eileen Pieczonka covers therapy dogs and cause and effect. Bullying, nutrition and family are Karlie Burnham’s topics, and Caren Cantrell covers story ideas and construction. LLA provides a comprehensive program infused with creativity and flexibility. Discussions of each book spark the children’s imagination, while extension activities reinforce key concepts and deepen comprehension of the lesson. Examples of these activities include motor-skill projects, puppets, singing and crafts. Teachers can customize the experience by choosing the number of authors they would like to visit and the hours. In addition, lessons are tailored to complement classroom themes or library studies. Fox, a former teacher and librarian, is the author of seven children’s books. She has been participating in school visits for the past six years. “When I heard about this program, I was intrigued with the idea of collaborating with other authors and introducing the program to kids,” she said. “I love reading to kids, plus I enjoy reaching out to schools I’ve never visited. Since I was a librarian, it feels natural to be in front of children.” Debbie Chamberlain, Barbara Renner and Rita Goldner recently visited Chandler’s Hull Elementary School. “They presented material that was a perfect fit for each grade level,” Hull’s Media Specialist Stefani Harman said. “Fourth to sixth grade learned illustrations, third learned about quails in the Sonoran Desert, and kindergarten to second learned about mindfulness. They all thoroughly enjoyed their presentations.” Most recently, the group visited Galveston Elementary in Chandler for their Dia de Los Ninos Literacy Event, where they shared their books and presented a lesson to the school. They attended the Northern Arizona Book Festival and St. Thomas’s Read Across America event. In July, the authors will be attending the Payson Book Festival.
