50 MAY 2023 More than 220 Brophy seniors walked the runway at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn in front of a crowd of 1,100 at the 39th annual Brophy Fashion Show in March. A highlight of the year for many seniors and their families, the fashion show raises money for the Brophy Generations Endowment Fund, which supports the Financial Aid Program. The runway show was full of excitement, and the boys truly showed off their personalities, with many choreographing individual dance moves, carrying state championship trophies and representing their clubs. The money raised by the fashion show significantly contributes to the yearly goal. This year the Financial Aid Budget is $6 million. While incoming students are accepted into Brophy on individual merit, financial aid is awarded to students who demonstrate need. Brophy’s student population is diverse, with approximately 100 elementary and middle schools represented and graduates attending some of the country’s most selective colleges and universities. Over one-third of all Brophy students receive some amount of financial aid. Parent volunteers staff the fashion show, and it is the culmination of many months of planning and hard work. Valley retailers like Tommy Bahama, Untuckit, Carter’s Men’s Store, The Clotherie, Faherty, Travis Mathew and others work with teams of senior boys to craft individual outfits for the runway. The boys truly enjoyed strutting their stuff! This year’s theme was “God in All Things,” and attendees were treated to a pre-show reception on the patio, including “The Art of Fashion” presentation by long-time Brophy Fashion Show partner Neiman Marcus. The senior boys took to the stage to show off their hand- picked outfits after the ‘professional’ show, featuring working models from the Agency Arizona. The annual event is a favorite of many Brophy parents and comes near the end of the boys’ four-year high school careers. Brophy President Adria Renke thanked the crowd of supporters and congratulated the parents for supporting and loving their boys during their Brophy journeys. Brophy is Arizona’s only Jesuit high school and receives no Diocesan funding. The institution develops intellectually competent leaders, open to growth, religious, loving and committed to doing justice. Brophy seeks to form Men for Others. The PTO initially created the event to serve as a companion to the Sweetheart Dance, and after being on hiatus, this year’s event was particularly exciting for everyone. Three different teams competed in the tournament. Kindergarteners through second graders were pitted against parents and teachers. Students in third through fifth grade were also matched against parents and teachers, and the middle school team went up against parents, teachers and fellow middle-school students. “I enjoyed the dodgeball event,” Spanish teacher Mr. Espino said. “Seeing the good vibes between students, parents, teachers and the entire community was a great way to spend a Friday evening.” The PTO created two separate dodgeball courts using painted lines on the field, and they had about 15-20 dodgeballs in play for each court. Every game was timed for 10-15 minutes. The students, teachers and parents wore orange Biltmore Prep sweatbands for the event. The event also featured raffle prizes, yard games like bowling and corn hole and food trucks. “I liked how we played against the teachers and how we were able to have fun with everyone,” fifth-grader Vianey said. “The best part of the dodgeball event was seeing how everyone was getting into the games. We forgot we were even at school,” fifth-grader Rian said. “I liked the dodgeball tournament,” third grader Ginny said, “first because there were tacos, second because it was really fun playing against the teachers and parents and third because we got to play outside. I thought we were going to be in the gym!” In addition to dodgeball, one of the participating parents got Home Depot to donate hundreds of wood-building kits for students to build and paint picture frames, clocks and mini whiteboards, all while wearing orange Home Depot aprons. “I didn’t expect it to be such a big event. It was so great watching the kids build the Home Depot kits, and I was able to build different connections with students as I helped them. Plus, the tacos were awesome. I appreciated the family environment,” Biltmore Educator Mr. Silva said.
