By Cassie Hepler New York City is dazzling, with its intense, pulsing energy that keeps you up until 5 a.m. or spits you out in a whirlwind of confusion – with empty pockets. Arcadia resident and author Brent Mekosh knows this experience well. “From 1996 to 2006, I experienced a transformative period on the New York Stock Exchange trading floor. During this time, the shift to a hybrid human and electronic trading system during the end of the 90s bull market and the 2000 bear market brought many trading opportunities,” he said. September 11 resulted in a significant loss for the community and the financial district of downtown New York. A high- profile investigation into practices on the trading floor left a lasting impact. It was at that point Mekosh found himself questioning the meaning of life. “My book, In the Shadow of a Dark Star: Godwinks and The Search for A Golden Thread , is about a young, somewhat confused guy who journeys, meets beautiful people, and finds unexpected truths along the way,” he said. And that’s putting it lightly. Mekosh has explored South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, India, Australia, Brunei, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Canada in the time covered by the book. Overall, he has traveled to more than 50 countries. “My process involved lots of writing in the early hours. Writing a book is about sitting down and forcing yourself to write, especially when you don’t want to. As Steven Pressfield argues in his book The War of Art , waiting for inspiration to strike is insufficient. I wrote nearly 300,000 words before finally arriving at the 100,000 or so worth printing,” he said. The subtitle, Godwinks and the Search for a Golden Thread , reflects the countless coincidences and meaningful connections that occurred on Mekosh’s path. He explained that the title of his book intertwines with astronomy. A dark star is a hypothetical object made of dark matter. “We don’t know if they exist, but we can infer that they may exist by other evidence, such as how they impact the environment around them. Similarly, I believe that the argument can be made for the existence of God – and that sometimes you need to look deeply into the shadows (especially your own) to find an incredibly bright truth,” he said. Mekosh said that he experienced so many god winks that, in hindsight, were all meaningfully related. “Each chance encounter and random event helped propel me forward on my journey,” he said. “The chapter entitled ‘Reckoning,’ which occurs about midway through the book, altered my life’s course. The entire second half is all about resolving that experience.” After traveling the world, Mekosh moved to Arizona and was struck by the people’s openness and the breathtaking beauty of the environment. “The southwest truly has it all. To paraphrase the President of Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, Rachel Sacco, Arizona is the sweet spot at the center of the universe. I love living here. Arcadia is the sweet spot at the heart of this wonderful state,” he said. No matter where he lives, his love of literature will never die. “I’m already working on my next book, focusing on providing value and guidance to our clients. This book won’t take me nearly as long to complete, but I hope it makes a positive impact,” he said. “I aspire to lead a team that serves our clients at the absolute highest level, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.” When he’s not writing or traveling the world, you can find Mekosh running the occasional ultramarathon, playing the guitar (badly, he says), and listening to music.
