44 APRIL 2023 By Jennifer Marshall Seniors Emilio DuComb and Mateo Rodriguez have had a lot to look forward to in their last year of high school, starting with being the first Arcadia High wrestling team members to place at the state tournament in over six years. “After not having a program in decades, the wrestling team started back up six years ago,” Coach Shawn Carbajal said. “This past February, Mateo placed fifth at state, and Emilio was the state runner-up.” Wrestling season runs from October to February, and every day after school, the team practices for over two hours – focusing on strength training, conditioning, technique and wrestling matches. “The hardest part of the season was the practices,” DuComb said. “But considering wrestling is much smaller than other sports, the coaches can work one-on-one with most of us.” In addition to placing at state, the team participated in the Peoria Tournament of Champions and the Flowing Wells Invitational. While Rodriguez was the only member of the team to place at both competitions, the group said they were still honored to compete in these challenging matches. “These are probably the two toughest tournaments in the state,” Carbajal said. “Some say these two events are even tougher than state. Overall, we had a very successful season as a team.” “Wrestling at state was a lot easier the second time,” DuComb said. “The first time, I can barely recall anything about the matches; I just remember wanting to win and being stressed. This year, I was relaxed the whole way through. I feel really good about placing again. Last year, I placed sixth, and this year I took second, so my improvement was awesome.” “I would say that wrestling at the state tournament was a fantastic experience,” Rodriguez said. “With my confidence level in the matches, I didn’t sweat entering, though. I was able to use all the talents I had honed while practicing. Overall, I felt strong, focused and prepared to wrestle. Rodriguez also said the state tournament was more competitive this year since the field in his weight class had more competitors than last year. As for the future of Arcadia’s wrestling team, Carbajal said that the athletes are excited about next season. They have already started training and are hoping for updated uniforms. “Considering that I have only had two years of wrestling experience, and I have only placed twice in the top five at the state level, I’m proud of what I accomplished,” Rodriguez said. “I want to keep setting and achieving higher ambitions. I want to keep improving and getting stronger.
