4 APRIL 2023 EDITOR’S NOTE In 2019, Governor Doug Ducey signed a house bill declaring lemonade the “state drink” of Arizona. Some citizens took issue with this, saying that horchata, prickly pear margaritas, even milk would make more sense. Alas, there’s no denying the tart, lemony beverage can be a perfect thirst quencher for Arizona’s sunny days. Perhaps this is why PANDA – a nonprofit that focuses on helping find treatments and cures for childhood diseases – came up with Lemonade Stand Day to help raise money for the organization and Steele Children’s Research Center. With help from the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation and Danzeisen Dairy, PANDA raised over $30,000 in 2023. “Helping other kids and making a difference in my community is the reason I wanted to host a lemonade stand. It was so much fun,” said seven-year-old Anderson Garvey, who – with the help of his sister, raised over $1,000 at their stands. Our April edition includes the summer camp guide, chock-full of everything “camp.” This year, we’ve highlighted cooking camps, filmmaking camps and, of course, cool things to do to beat the summer heat. Bouvier came into my life when she was feral and deemed ‘unadoptable’ by the rescue. A difficult kittenhood, to boot. She is now 15, and the love of my life. She is independent, sparky and ‘the cat who walks alone’, but also much more trusting, expressive and a loving creature. As a cat behaviorist for almost 38 years, I remain amazed at how much she’s taught me. The set-in-stone maxim that feral cats cannot be adopted past young kittenhood is a myth, I assure you! -J.
