APRIL 2023 19 By Mark Hays It’s an annual tradition that started in 2018, where lemonade stands spring up all over the Phoenix area for one day, with one common goal: “Children Helping Children.” PANDA, which stands for People Acting Now Discover Answers, is an organization founded by the Phoenix Women’s Board of the Steele Children’s Research Center. Its goal is to support the discovery of improved treatments and cures for rare childhood diseases by raising awareness and funds – through events like Lemonade Stand Day – for Steele Children’s Research Center at the University of Arizona. “Since it was founded in 1999, the idea of ‘Children Helping Children’ has been at the core of our mission,” President Courtney Gaintner said. “From Lemonade Stand Day to our annual Children’s Fashion Show, there’s nothing that brings me more joy than knowing we’re helping to inspire the next generation of philanthropists.” Lemonade Stand Day was an astounding success this March, with over 30 stands popping up around the Valley. “With the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation fundraising match of $10,000, our members and community families raised over $33,000,” Board Member Lori MacLeod said. The mission of children helping children caught the attention of the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation – which was excited to be part of the campaign. They pitched in by sponsoring the event, contributing supplies, and matching the donations. “Children are incredible champions of change, and when we empower them to make a change in their community and help others, the impact is lasting. It helps now and also nurtures a sense of supporting issues that are important to them and is carried with them throughout their life,” Executive Director Lyndsey Waugh said. Since 2015, the Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation has been dedicated to inspiring, educating, and empowering all people, especially children, to live healthy lives. They focus on nutritional education, including teaching children how to grow and prepare fresh food and emphasizing the importance of healthy eating. The other major contributor to Lemonade Stand Day was Danzeisen Dairy, which provided lemonade for all the stands. The kids who participated in the event were grateful to be a part of the experience. “I was excited to be a part of Lemonade Stand Day. I know that every dollar I raised helps another child feel better,” said nine-year- old Anna Western, who also participates in PANDA’s annual Children’s Fashion Show. “Helping other kids and making a difference in my community is the reason I wanted to host a lemonade stand. It was so much fun,” said seven- year-old Anderson Garvey. azpanda.org Lemonade Stand Day raises over $30K $33,000,” Board Member
