Bruns It was 1967 when two car-loving friends named Tom Barrett and Russ Jackson got together and put on a car show and parade that they called “ Fiesta de los Autos Elegantes .” It was more than just a car show – from the very beginning they were raising money for charity. Their first car event raised enough to make a donation to the Scottsdale Art Center and purchase some books for the community library. Four years later in 1971, the first Barrett- Jackson Collector Car Auction was held in a dirt lot next to the old Safari Hotel in Scottsdale. From there, the auction grew rapidly, along with the philanthropic endeavors. They moved to Westworld in 1989, and the collector car auction became a social spectacle, earning its place as one of the largest and most-attended events in the Valley – up there with the Super Bowl and the Phoenix Open. It is also a generous charitable organization. This year, more than 300,000 came out to experience the 52nd annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Auction over nine days in January. 1907 no-reserve vehicles brought in auction sales of $184.2 million. Over 1,100 pieces of authentic automobilia were also auctioned for more than $6.41 million, bringing total auction sales above $190.6 million. Continuing their philanthropic efforts, Barrett-Jackson sold five vehicles for charity, with 100 percent of the price from each vehicle benefiting local and national nonprofits for $1.89 million, collectively. The 2021 Shelby Super Snake Count’s Kustoms Edition sold for $350,000 to benefit Camp Freedom. A 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning 4×4 Super Crew Pickup sold for $275,000 to benefit Fighter Country Foundation. A 2024 GMC Hummer EV Edition SUV sold for $500,000 to benefit Tread Lightly! – which promotes responsible recreation through stewardship, education and communication. General Colin L. Powell’s 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray sold for $200,000 to benefit America’s Promise Alliance. A 2024 Ford Mustang GT Fastback (VIN #1) sold for $490,000 and received an additional $75,000 in donations from guests on the auction block – JDRF benefited from this sale. Barrett-Jackson typically hosts four auctions around the country every year, although Scottsdale is the largest and runs longest. This year, Barrett-Jackson will be in Palm Beach, Florida in April and Las Vegas in June.
