50 MARCH 2023 WHAT COLOR? WHERE ELSE? THE MASCOT? WHO SAID? Red Holland Fighting Irish Dick Fagan DID YOU KNOW? LEPRECHAUNS Fagan Fagan Fagan Everyone identifies leprechauns by their green clothes, red beard and derby hat. But according to Legends and Stories of Ireland from 1831, the fairies dress in red. Irish novelist Samuel Lover describes them as wearing “a red square-cut coat, richly laced with gold, and a cocket hat.” So where do the green jacket and pants come from? While some believe leprechauns sport different colors according to their regions, others joke the signature green simply matched the Irish shamrock better. – huffpost.com Kabouters are gnomes in Holland. They are akin to the leprechauns of Ireland, and in Holland stories, they are small and hairy creatures. These tiny people live underground or in holes up the hill. In most of their folklore, male kabouters wear red pointed hats and have long full beards. Just like leprechauns, they are solitary creatures and they punish those who spy on them. – dutch-folklore.fandom.com To keep up with the Irish folklore, and the university’s nickname of Fighting Irish, the University of Notre Dame chose a leprechaun as their mascot. For many years, their mascot was an Irish terrier dog. Starting 1965, however, the side-view figure of a leprechaun has been the team’s official logo. Every year, a student portrays the live version of the leprechaun. The chosen student will wear an Irish country hat and a green cutaway suit for everyone to see. – 247sports.com Oregon-based journalist Dick Fagan saw a small hole in a block of concrete and began writing a newspaper column about Patrick O’Toole, the head leprechaun who lived there. Fagan added flowers and greenery to the area around the hole and made a sign, making the area the “smallest park in the world.” In 1976, it became the official park of the city for St. Patrick’s Day. Today, it’s known as the Mill Ends Park – and boasts benches and a swimming pool. – localadventurer.com Serving the Arcadia area since 1958 | D O G S | CATS | B I R DS | EXOTI C S | MEDI CAL • DENTAL • SU RG ERY • BOARDI NG • G ROOMI NG • O B EDI EN C E TRAI N I NG WE’RE OFFERING TRAINING CLASSES! DID YOU KNOW? LEPRECHAUNS THE LEGEND OF SLIEVE FOYE In 1989, a local businessman in Carlingford, Ireland, claimed to have found evidence of a real leprechaun on a mountain called Slieve Foye. He said that after hearing a scream near the wishing well, he found bones, a tiny suit, and gold coins near scorched earth. The evidence is now displayed behind a glass case for visitors to come see. – atlasobscura.com Leprechauns are considered fairies. According to Irish folklore, the creatures are typically small in size and prone to mischief. They lived in Ireland long before the first human stepped foot on the Emerald Isle. There are different theories regarding where the name leprechaun comes from, but the most popular belief is that it originates from the Middle Irish word lūchorpān. Lū means “small body.” All leprechauns are usually described and pictured as elderly men with beards. The reason is simply that are no female leprechauns. In early 1975, the Lucky Charms leprechaun was replaced by Waldo the Wizard, a kind, slightly forgetful character created by Alan Snedeker. He wore a green cape and wizard’s hat, and tested high with New England audiences. However, his appearance was a brief one – Lucky came back for good less than a year later. Legend says that if you manage to get hold of a leprechaun, he will grant you three wishes to be released again. Be careful, though. The leprechaun could jinx you to have bad luck for the rest of your days. Leprechauns have been protected by a European Directive since 2009. In March, there are marathons that encourage the participants to dress like leprechauns. The festive runners help raise money for charity. According to the locals at Carlingford, Ireland, there are 236 leprechauns in their region. Leprechaunism is a very rare disorder that’s got something to do with insulin resistance. A brand of Irish whiskey conducted a survey asking people if they believe that leprechauns are real. The results showed that at least one-third of the Irish population believes in their existence. Leprechauns are featured in Harry Potter . Known as clauricorns in the series, they are mischievous and magical beasts that were displayed during the Quidditch World Cup. – atlasobscura.com 480.946.5076 4130 n marshall way • scottsdale art one gallery | foundation Representing students and local artists of Arizona since 1993 artonegalleryinc.com @artonegalleryinc Boomerang by Jennifer Gross • ceramic • 15.5” X 16.5” X 5” • $500
