40 MARCH 2023 A rizona Highways Television took a whirlwind tour of downtown Mesa and discovered everything: history, music, culture, and nostalgia. We started with the Arizona Museum of Natural History, known as the “dino” museum, where guests can find giant, prehistoric reptiles and extinct mammals brought “back to life.” Animatronics mimic the movements of these magnificent creatures as their prowess echoes through the dinosaur hall. T-Rex, one of the largest and most well-known meat eaters, had quite a presence in the southwest, roaming Arizona, Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. The museum brings its stories directly to visitors. They have a research facility and a paleontology lab, so guests get the latest information about all that is old. The museum does an excellent job of engaging visitors in active learning experiences. There, they can discover fossils, hang out at the dinosaur dig pit or try their hands at gold panning – even feel the rumble of an exploding volcano. The beginnings of the Arizona Museum of Natural History were a grassroots effort championed by local chapters of historians and archeologists who recognized the importance of sharing the history that shaped the southwest. Another place that has shaped generations is the Milano Music Center. Opened in 1946, right after World War II, it has been the musical heart of Mesa for close to 80 years. This mom-and-pop store is a destination for everything musical under one roof. They teach lessons, rent instruments like trumpets, French horns, drums, violins, and cellos, and repair all band and orchestra instruments. They’ve also watched some of their youngest students and customers grow up to become famous musicians, like the band Jimmy Eat World and Jason DeVore from Authority Zero. They also have a fair share of well-known musicians that stop in to shop, like blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa, Alice Cooper and songwriter and singer Vince Gill. Those looking to experience a different culture in Mesa can head to Hope’s Frybread. Hope and her husband were students at ASU. She started making fry bread using her grandmother’s recipe to earn money. Hope eventually began catering, opened a “pop-up” tent on the weekends, and opened a restaurant. The menu includes fry bread with fixings like a Navajo taco, burgers or fry bread fusion, with grilled teriyaki chicken, pineapple, cabbage and Siracha. There are desserts, too – check out the Nutella banana fry bread for a sweet finish to the meal. Given Arizona’s indigenous community, Hope feels she is fulfilling a need, and customers say it’s a little taste of home. We also stopped at the BRI Taproom and Arcade. Here, Owner Matt Trethewey combines his two passions: craft beer and old-school arcade games. He’s got 30 video consoles that include Donkey Kong and Centipede and 12 pinball machines, with new ones rotated monthly. Trethewey says it’s not just Gen-Xers reveling in the arcade age. He gets every age group – from 6-year-old kids to folks in their 80s. He also set up retro TV’s where he plays MTV and cartoons. A trip to downtown Mesa can be educational, historical, musical and a whole lot of wholesome fun.
