36 MARCH 2023 By Mark Hays Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a nonprofit dedicated to “Feeding Kids, Feeding Spirits and Empowering Communities.” The organization opened in 1987 and relies heavily on the generous help of volunteers, like the third- eighth-grade students at St. Theresa Catholic School. During Catholic Schools Week, schools throughout the Diocese of Phoenix participate in community service projects. St. Theresa picked FMSC, where the students helped raise money and prepare meal kits for the organization at the beginning of the year. “This project was perfect for accommodating the STCS student population in number and ability on this day,” educator Kate Strohmeyer said. “Anyone ages 5 to 105 can pack food for starving children around the world at this facility.” As a Catholic school, they believe in serving those most in need. “We have social teachings and principles integrated into our faith and curriculum, which include respecting the human person, working for the common good, and caring for the poor and hungry,” Strohmeyer said. In addition to volunteering in the kitchen, the students also raised over $2,600 in donations. These funds will allow 30 children to eat daily for an entire year. What’s more, the amount they raised was much higher than their original target. “Our goal was for each class to feed one child for a year, but we exceeded our goal by 200 percent,” Strohmeyer said. “None of this would have been possible without the support of all the members of the St. Theresa community, who contributed generously to the fundraiser.” An important part of FMSC’s mission is providing “manna packs.” These food packages contain rice, soy, vegetables and vitamins. Volunteers put these packs together and then ship them to humanitarian organizations all over the globe. An exciting feature of this program is that volunteers can stay updated on the status of the manna packs they contributed to. “By providing an email address, FMSC keeps all volunteers up to date,” Strohmeyer said. “There is nothing more special to me than kids feeding kids. The students at St. Theresa not only packed enough to provide 24,840 meals, but they also worked to provide nearly half the cost of those meals. It was truly a blessing to have them with us to help make hope tangible for so many,” Development Manager Clint Palmer said. FMSC has a 99 percent success rate in delivering packages to their destinations, even in dangerous areas. The organization attributes this to the blessings and prayers they perform over the food, something all volunteers can take part in if they choose. The students were grateful to be a part of this mission of feeding the hungry: “I think it showed me how lucky I am to be able to help people and to be in a position to be able to help them,” eighth-grader Valeria Rosas said. “It was a good experience because it made me realize you don’t have to do a lot to help people. The process was made very easy and was well organized,” eighth-grader Michael Swenson said. “It also made me realize how fortunate I am to have everything that I do have, including food and shelter, things we take for granted.” fmsc.org Helping hands = happy hearts for this group Sam Spiekerman, Braxton Tate, Cooper Fitzgerald, Sawyer Reithinger, Landon Radden, Brady Lauer, Rhett Lindstrom, Michael Swenson, Alejandro Ballesteros, Charlie Murphy, Roman Vaughn, and Max Garske.
