40 JANUARY 2023 F lorence, Arizona, was established in 1866 and is a small town with a significant history. It’s one of Arizona’s oldest settlements, and also the final resting place of Charles Poston, who was referred to as the “father of Arizona” because of his efforts in lobbying for the creation of the territory. Just an hour from Phoenix, Florence offers a little something for everyone. Surrounded by wide open spaces and gorgeous scenic views, there are many opportunities to hike, explore and take in the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. There are two museums, a variety of mom-and-pop shops and locally- owned eateries. This town also has a quirky side. There’s one corner where time stands still. The clock on the old courthouse has been stuck at 11:44 since the building opened in 1891. That’s because the hands never move – they’re painted on. It was originally an economic decision, but now it’s a uniquely Florence tradition. Another reason to visit is the Windmill Winery. When it first opened, owner Harold Christ hosted wine tastings featuring California wines. It was always a dream to grow his own varietals, and he made that dream come true. Christ is currently growing Italian grapes on the property. Windmill also has a joint venture with a Willcox winery, where they are growing 15 different varietals. The 110-year-old barn that Windmill operates out of hosts wine tastings and more than 200 weddings a year. Christ bought the barn in Green Bay, Wisconsin, tore it down, brought it to Arizona and built it back up again. Three nights a week, they have live entertainment, food trucks and a majestic mountain range or quiet lakeside view for guests. It’s a place for locals and visitors looking for something special. It may not be a bustling metropolis, but Florence boasts charming local characters and small main street businesses like the Florence Fudge Shop, where residents have become addicted to the homemade confections. Popular flavors include orange creamsicle, peanut butter chocolate, snickers, butter pecan and maple walnut. The fudge shop doubles as a café where guests can enjoy homemade soup, salads and sandwiches. Also on Main Street are Peyton’s Hidden Treasures and Sweet P’s Candy Store, where old things become new again. At Peyton’s, folks can hunt for fun bargains and one-of-a-kind pieces. Sweet P’s offers famous saltwater taffy, nostalgic candies and vintage drinks. It’s like taking a walk down memory lane. California transplants Paula Butterworth and her daughter Danielle own and operate both stores. They function out of a 130-year-old building (which is on the Historical Registrar) that survived a fire in 1917, served as a hideout during prohibition and was turned into a Greyhound bus stop in the 1930s. A historic structure with a new future, much like the town of Florence. This unique getaway is waiting for you just off an Arizona Highway. Florence is a nod to the past that’s ready for a memorable future Robin is the host and executive producer of the Arizona Highways Television , Saturdays and Sundays on CBS.
