28 JANUARY 2023 By Jennifer Marshall The Tuesday before Thanksgiving was a special day for the fifth-graders of Tavan Elementary. It’s a special day every year, as the school holds its annual Turkey Bowl, a day of football and fun before the actual Turkey Day commences. “This is a Tavan tradition that’s been going on for probably more than 30 years,” P.E. Teacher Ellen Young said. “Our fifth- grade students play a flag football game against each other, and the entire school walks to Arcadia High to watch and cheer everyone on.” What made this year’s Turkey Bowl particularly exciting for the young players was the coaches. Amp Lee and Drew Stanton, both former NFL stars who played running back and quarterback for various teams – including the Arizona Cardinals – joined in the fun that day. The kids also had help from David Alfaro, coach of local youth sports league Arcadia Sports Central. Alfaro and his wife, Katrina, attended all the team practices and coordinated with the Arcadia High Football Boosters to create a cheer tunnel for the players to run through during team introductions. “We named the teams the Cardinals and the Sun Devils,” Young said, “and it was the closest game. One team would get a touchdown. Then the other team would get a touchdown. It came down to time, and the Cardinals were the winners. Drew and David called the plays, and the teams were both really amazing!” “It was pretty fun, even though our team lost. I was on the same team as my friends. At first, I didn’t want to participate, but it ended up being worth it,” fifth-grader Emma Fong said. Young said that former Arcadia High graduates John Albright and John Thomas announced the game, and in between quarters, the kids showed the announcers how to “floss” (a dance move). “It was really fun, and we had great sportsmanship. Even though I didn’t get the ball, I still loved it a lot,” student Braden Stapleton said. “I think it was one of the most interesting things I’ve done this year,” student Brooke Bennett said. “It really made me more interested in playing football. The coaches were really great. Before I played in the Turkey Bowl, I didn’t know what a running back was, but the coaches taught us really well!” In addition to the Tuesday football game, the Friday before, Tavan held their annual Turkey Trot, where kids and their parents ran laps – just for fun – and the winner got to “pie” a volunteer teacher. This year, PE teacher Molly Creagh agreed to take a pie in the face. “The event was incredible,” Young said, “and all the students had a wonderful time!
