4 DECEMBER 2022 EDITOR’S NOTE Full disclosure: I have been listening to Christmas music on and off for probably the last three months. There’s just something about a familiar tune that can make all the day’s drama fade away. This December, we included a plethora of holiday happenings within our pages – I might have been able to fill the first half of the paper with all the events going on, but I reined myself in because we’ve also got lots of neighborhood news to share. Middle-school students Giovanni Santora and Cooper O’Clair attended the US National Rotax GoKarting Race in Indiana, where they won first and second place. Cooper then headed to Portimão, Portugal, to compete in the Grand Finals against 400 drivers from around the world. Juniors at Veritas Prep celebrated a rite of passage when they attended the Blazer Ceremony, a school-wide assembly where the students received – you guessed it – blazers embellished with the school logo. Skyler and Elle Fields attended the Arizona Children’s Business Fair last month and learned the ins and outs of the industry: creating, setting up, and selling their products, called Calm Bottles and Marvelous Marshmallows. We hope this season is filled with all the love, laughter and joy – happy holidays to you and yours and thank you for reading Arcadia News. JANUARY Fitness FEBRUARY History MARCH Spring / Home & Design “May your walls know joy, may every room hold laughter, and every window open to great possibility.” – Mary Anne Radmacher By Mallory Gleich Arcadia’s Boy Scout Troop 6 recently recognized member Tanner McGeough for earning Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts program. The designation, which only 4 percent of Scouts achieve, requires years of hard work and dedication. Tanner is a senior at Veritas Prep. He’s been in Scouts since sixth grade, thanks to his friend, Peter, who was already in the organization. Tanner’s parents thought it would benefit him, and it turns out, they were right. “Scouting has provided me with so many great lessons and experiences. Being a scout has helped me develop the ability to be a leader, introduced me to older scouts and adults whom I was able to look up to as a younger scout, and helped me form new friendships,” Tanner said. For his Eagle project, Tanner led Troop 6 in building and installing two message chalkboards at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church while also landscaping the nearby areas. “Prince of Peace has provided a location for Troop 6 to hold meetings and awards ceremonies, so I wanted to give something to the place that has supported us for as long as I’ve been involved,” Tanner said. “The project went smoothly, but planning was stressful and took a lot of work. Prince of Peace was very helpful throughout the process.” “Adults and Scouts worked together to build a lasting improvement in the church,” Tanner’s dad, Mike, said. “Like many Scouts before him, Tanner’s road to Eagle was not easy, which made his accomplishment particularly satisfying.” His Eagle Scout ceremony was held on September 15, surrounded by peers, family and friends. “When Linda and I were on stage with Tanner during the ceremony, we both reflected on the hard work he put in to make the moment happen,” Mike said. “As a Scout dad, I was fortunate to share Tanner’s journey over the years through many memorable experiences, like camping and backpacking trips, and many service projects that benefited the community.” “Becoming an Eagle Scout was the culmination of years of participation in Scouting, and it was rewarding to see the hard work I put in pay off. I was supported by so many; it was great to share this award with them,” Tanner said. Outside of Scouts, he enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, and playing tennis. After graduation, Tanner plans on attending an Arizona college and finding a career “that will allow me to have a positive impact in the world.” Tanner is the 223rd Eagle Scout to come out of Arcadia’s Troop 6 since it was founded in 1934. Nationwide, more than 2.5 million Scouts have earned the Eagle rank since 1912. Troop 6 meets at Prince of Peace Church regularly throughout the school year.
